re: Rosetta@home

I have 2 computers to run on a project. (The heat (84F lately) is causing the xeons to reboot so they are going offline)

I have the 3.2 and a 2.4 still and want to continue running Rosetta@Home on them, but they will be downgraded soon to dialup to cut costs for a while.

Will it work to set them up to dial out when needed, also I am getting the dial up free, will this clog the connection?

Its been a few years and my mind gets rusty after a month or two lol

I think you should be ok. One of the things you can now do with Rosetta is control the default time each work unit takes. I think it can be set from 1 hour to 1 day.

I also do not think that this makes the units larger to download, it just adds additional iterations to each unit. So, based off my disk usage, it would probably end up with 5-10mb of download per computer per day.

Does anyone else think my rambling sounds about right?

Toset your target WU run times go to:

View or edit Rosetta@home preferences
Edit Rosetta@home preferences
Pick a time from the dropdown box Target CPU run time (anywhere from 1hr to 1 day)
AFAIK it does not affect the size of the download. It will have some impact on the upload.

What this basicly does is tells the WU to keep making models until it hits the Target run time. Mainly it was introduced for dial-up users and bandwith sensitive users in mind.

Granted, the longer the run time on the WU, the more opertunity for Murphy or a gremlin to pay a visit, but...

Oh, forgot to add, you'll need to adjust your cache settings if you go to long WU run times or BONIC will get all freaked out.
