Are you waiting for the 520 before you choose which card to upgrade to or something?

Remember all the ATI faithful yelling at me earlier this year:
"The R520 is taped out Rollo! It will be here in a couple months!"
Hmmmmm.
Yeah, "we should wait a couple weeks and see the R520" before getting 7800s.
Maybe by Christmas we'll be able to.

Man, 4-6 weeks just to retape then how many months to ramp up production if this iteration works; we'll be lucky to see this launched by Christmas (hard launched, that is). At this point, I'm so tired of the bigfoot rumors, like keys said; I'm thinking we should just not acknowledge its existence until a live one is captured (read: you can buy one at Fry's).
Now if we factor in the yield issues we keep hearing about, I'm thinking that appreciable volumes won't even be around this year. I'm still excited to see if they can pull it off, but it's looking more and more like ATi's version of NV30 (at least on the production side of things)Originally posted by: keysplayr2003
It takes 3 months (about 120 days) from tape to producable, working silicon. So we are looking at NO sooner than October/November at the current pace.

keys, d oyou mean 3 months or 4 months? because 4 months would be incredible. the R50 will no longer have any sort of advantage over NV considering NV would be getting to release it's mid cycle refresh about then.

I'm less interested in ATI getting the R520 out now, than in ATI producing a card that kills the 7800GTX and is available in good quantities. If a third retaping is what it takes, I'm all for it. Especially if the card ends up being a 32-pipe 600+mhz monster.

Therein lies the rub... I imagine wth each re-tape, ATI is taking some of its "monsterness" out to improve yields. At this rate by the time it's all said and done, ATI will be launching a 24 pipe card that performs about as well as the 7800GTX, but doing it 6 months after nVidia.

what article?I think that is confirmed in my article. The R580 sounds like a 32 pipe card but wont show up until after the end of the year.
