Are you waiting for the 520 before you choose which card to upgrade to or something?

As it stands right now, I am not going to buy this gen (that could change) but I would like to at least have the opportunity to see some benchmarks from this missing link. This is like tracking BigFoot. There have been sightings, but the photos are all blurry

LOL

Remember all the ATI faithful yelling at me earlier this year:
"The R520 is taped out Rollo! It will be here in a couple months!"

Hmmmmm.

Yeah, "we should wait a couple weeks and see the R520" before getting 7800s.
Maybe by Christmas we'll be able to.

I just bought a 7800. If the R520 comes out, and Nvidia releases an "ultra" to compete with it, I'll use the step-up program.

I fully plan on buying the 6800gt agp flavour in the next 6 months to a year unless there's a faster card at $300 by then. I am curious about whether or not they'll release a 520 agp card.

lol @ bigfoot reference

I'll be laughing at you Rollo if the 7800GT comes in AGP and can over clock to GTX speeds for 100 dollars cheaper. I mean, the demand for AGP is low, so it should be cheaper...right?

I'm less interested in ATI getting the R520 out now, than in ATI producing a card that kills the 7800GTX and is available in good quantities. If a third retaping is what it takes, I'm all for it. Especially if the card ends up being a 32-pipe 600+mhz monster.

Man, 4-6 weeks just to retape then how many months to ramp up production if this iteration works; we'll be lucky to see this launched by Christmas (hard launched, that is). At this point, I'm so tired of the bigfoot rumors, like keys said; I'm thinking we should just not acknowledge its existence until a live one is captured (read: you can buy one at Fry's).

1) It's The Inquirer. Grain of salt.

2) I'm still inclined to believe it. No wonder ATi held on to R300 so long - looks like they have serious issues designing new cores.

It takes 3 months (about 120 days) from tape to producable, working silicon. So we are looking at NO sooner than October/November at the current pace.

They are indicating volume production right about the time this thing tapes out. I wouldnt expect to see retail cards until middle of Sept at the earliest.

Beyond3d is reporting they are having leakage issues.
ATI should have taken a lesson from Nvidia and the NV30 and TMSC.
Dont plan a chip around a new process with that company.

I don't think I'll buy my new rig until late august, so if ATi still hasn't presented anything usefull at that moment, nvidia it will be.

Now if we factor in the yield issues we keep hearing about, I'm thinking that appreciable volumes won't even be around this year. I'm still excited to see if they can pull it off, but it's looking more and more like ATi's version of NV30 (at least on the production side of things)

keys, d oyou mean 3 months or 4 months? because 4 months would be incredible. the R50 will no longer have any sort of advantage over NV considering NV would be getting to release it's mid cycle refresh about then.

Therein lies the rub... I imagine wth each re-tape, ATI is taking some of its "monsterness" out to improve yields. At this rate by the time it's all said and done, ATI will be launching a 24 pipe card that performs about as well as the 7800GTX, but doing it 6 months after nVidia.

I think that is confirmed in my article. The R580 sounds like a 32 pipe card but wont show up until after the end of the year.

Volume shipments mean shipments to the OEMs. From there they are assembled and packaged and shipped to retail outlets. At best that process will be completed in a month but more like 2-3 months before you see anything significant in the channel.

Look how long it took them on the last generation of cards.

"I just cannot understand one thing. How come ATI was able to ship millions of R500, Xbox 360 chips to Microsoft's launch scheduled for October, when it seems to having trouble with yields for the R520? Both chips are using the same new 90 nanometre marchitecture."

But.. But.... ATi arent producing those chips... MS are.
