Really quick dual boot question...

Quick question, if i want to use the same programs on Win2k and Win98se (I am going to set up a dual boot tonight) and I don't want to waste disk space twice...but i want to use the same preferences (such as in Eudora...so both will have the same in/out/trash/preferences)- how can i do that?

Install the programs twice but just send them to the same folder? (I'll have a separate partition for games and apps)

Don't forget, you'll need seperate partitions for both OS, and you can install some programs into the same directory by installing from each OS(because you'll have seperate System folders) but, not all programs will work that way, I have done the same thing and MOST programs will work. My advice is to get a bigger hardrive, it'll save you a few format/reinstall opportunities!

Thanks ausm, I would think that would work. Yeah, I just have to be careful to make sure that the programs work in both Win2k and 98se.

My plan is to make a partition for Win98se, W2k, Apps+Games, Docs.

Then when I want to use the same program in Win98SE and W2k I'll install it in both OSes but to the same folder on the Apps+Games partition.

Eh, I am thinking about a bigger hard drive...but I dunno yet- I'd have to find someone to buy my current one first because I want to get another 128MB RAM too.

I've been doing that for years without any problems. Installing in the same folder only overwrites the files that are installed every time, so the .ini files (or netscape user folder, etc.) can be used for both OSes. It's a bit trickier with 2k now that a lot of stuff is kept in \doc&settings\user\app.data(or local settings)\. On one machine I have 98 and 2k on the same partition without any troubles.

Yea, I understand, and it'll work good for ya, but any reason for the dual boot. I used to dual boot winnt4 and win98 because of the lack of support for graphics apps I use, and game support in nt4, but since win2k..no dual boot!

I dunno really, but I guess it's more of a safety blanket. Heh, I had some reasons for it yesterday, but I can't seem to remember them today...oh well.
