I formatted and tried reinstalling XP Pro last night, and it went to hell...

There's two copies of XP on my comp now and no matter how many times I delete them they are still there...

The HD is formatted, I just can't log onto windows... First it game me virtual memory errors, and now its giving me Checksum errors... The two checksums I got were like SHWARLI.dll (not 100% on that name) and WININET.dll...

Microsoft Tech Support was worthless, they couldn't help at all... When I copied the setup files there were a few corrupted files, but I went on anyways... The files were (off the top of my head) wingdings.tff (shouldn't matter?), winhelp.exe, and another one... It used to say that wininet.dll couldn't be found on the disc but it found it, and now thats the checksum file...

Is there anyway I can get my computer to forget all detials of the install and just go for a clean install again? I've formatted before but have had no problems of this magnitude...

Thanks for help in advance, I might just be screwed here...

Here's what I would do.

1. Get a new XP CD. You can borrow one from a friend (if they have the same version) and just use your CD key. Your file corruption issues are likely the result of bad media.
2. Get yourself a bootdisk from Bootdisk.com. Boot from it and run "fdisk /mbr". This will reset your master boot record and ensure that you don't see "multiple copies" of XP when you reinstall.
3. Boot from the new XP CD, delete your current partition, re-create the partition, format and install.

Everytime Ihave had problems with installs I use the utility from the HD manifacture to zero the drive and that cures the install problems if the install disk is OK.

wininet.dll is an important file, as would the help file. The true type font - doesn't really matter. Best recommendation - format your HD (use a boot disk, like mentioned in another post here), and re-install Windows XP. IF you're getting errors, make sure:

1) Your copy of XP is legit (which I assume it is if you called MS tech support)

2) Your CDROM lens isn't dirty - have a CD lens cleaner?

3) check your IDE cables and make sure they're properly secured.

If the CD is legit, it should be good, and it would be a problem transferring from CD to HD. If you've got another CDROM drive in your PC, try installing from that one.

I agree with everyone else. Use the boot disk, and the Format /mbr command once in the command prompt (via booting by boot disk.)
