Just for comparisons sake, without a fan hdd reached 49 degrees, fan in the middle drops to around 44 - 45, fan at front hovers around 38 degrees. I've also removed the door that covers the filters, with the doors on temp were around 40-41 degrees or there abouts.
I have 3 Seagate hard drives in the lower cage.
I have the fan in the middle. It is a Yate Loon with a 33-Ohm resistor added in series to lower its RPM.
In a warm day, HD temperatures could reach 40.
When the room temperature is around 24C, they reach 37C.
The filter and the door are as they were and are not changed.
The main reason for having the fan in the middle, I believe, is to have it a little bit away from the user to reduce its effective noise. The cooling obviously could suffer compared to having it right in front.
But, not by a significant degree.
