Reapplying Thermal Compound

I'm upgrading to a new motherboard here in a few days, and I was told I need to apply new thermal compound when I do so. On top of that, I was told I need to rid of the old compound before applying more.

What is the proper way of doing so? Thanks a ton!

Also, does anyone know if the Zalman Cooling system will fit in a ASUS maximus formula motherboard?

Thanks a ton guys!

I always reapply when reseating a heatsink. Sometimes its not necessary since it was only on there a few hours or less, but I do it anyways. Arctic Silver remains pastey and pliable for a while too so its definitely not 'always' necessary, but I'm always in the habit of reapplying it in case I got any dirt or hair on it in the process of taking them apart (which can accumulate around the sides of the cpu/heatsink as the paste often sqeezes off the edge when the heatsink is initially mounted.) I use alcohol and cotton cosmetic removal pads (that don't come apart too easy) to wipe down the surfaces, and maybe some qtips in alcohol for edges if necessary, and canned air to dry and dust the cleaned surface if necessary.

And when applying the paste, I always squeeze a bit out and work it around with an old credit card into a very thin smooth layer over the cpu. Very little is needed, and I always make sure the entire surface is coated, albeit a very thin layer of it. Motherboard manufacturers usually put a dollop? in the middle and then mount the heatsink, but when doing it manually, its impossible to seat it perfectly straight up and down, which is why I always put a very thin coat over the entire cpu. Getting too much can probably negatively affect heat dispersion, if the coat is too thick and if too much has squeezed out along the sides, since there is heat buildup there too that will be harder to disperse when in a glob of thermal paste.

To remove the old thermal compund, just wipe it off with an alcohol dampened soft cotton cloth until it is all gone. Make sure you don't leave any lint on the heatsink.

Then follow this guide for whatever cpu you have.

Besides 'jjsole''s "credit card method", you can also try placing a small dot in the middle of your CPU (half a grain of rice, about).

An inspiring quote about putting on thermal paste (I forget who told me this, but credit goes to them):

"If you think you've put enough, you've probably put too much. If you think you don't have enough, you probably have just the right amount" <-- for those that aren't practiced hands at applying thermal paste = P

dollop in the middle is not correct (anymore), that is the older method based on single core CPUs.

if you have dual-core or quad-core CPU, follow solinar's directions and link

also some have mentioned using a coffee filter as a "lint free" cloth with alcohol to remove the old stuff.

of course despite arctic silver's warning not to spread the TIM yourself, I've done it without any problems using a razor blade, just make sure it is very thin and very uniform.

Agree on the spreading of TIM. I've gotten to where I can use a credit card, razor blade, even a flat toothpick, for spreading it out thinly and evenly. One thing I do do each time is I make sure to stop spreading it when I get within a couple millimeters of the edge of the IHS. That way if the thickness is not just right at least a bunch of TIM isn't oozing out.

P.S. - Which Zalman ???
