I'm running a WHS2011 box that's got 4 2tbs hdd that I'm looking to replace. I was thinking of getting a couple of 8tb drives to start, but I'm not sure which ones to get. When I built this think 15 years ago i was getting some hitachi deskstars (?) drives and they've been flawless and still running strong, but I'm running out of space now. Need recs on which drives to get. If 8tb isn't the $/tb sweet spot now, what capacity is? Brands etc.?

Thanks.

Are you looking for new drives or would you entertain some used ones?

I bought some 12TB HGST drives a few months back from GoHardDrive on eBay for like $80 each. They offered a 5 year warranty on them. It looks like they have doubled in price since then, WOW. Both drives I bought had about 4 years of use.

I'd prefer new but that's a great price. Although if it just doubled, I'd still rather just go with new.

There was a massive supply last summer and consumers benefited at the time. (Some) Data centers retire those drives before they fail, and the HGSTs can have a lot of life left in them.

But yeah the oversupply ended because prices are much higher now, in which case brand new is more sensible.
$120 is the going rate for WD Blue 8TB. 2 year warranty.

In2Photos and I purchased HGST drives from goHardDrive, although our experience was routed through eBay.

These drives are pulled out of data center servers after some 3+ years of operation. They are used. Renewed means they wiped the dust off with a cloth. The warranty is provided by goHardDrive instead of the manufacturer.

I don't have any personal experience, but Exos should be generally good. It's a little hard to say whether I'd rather pay $90 for a used Exos or $115 for a new consumer HDD (NAS drives are closer to $150 new). Probably the used drive, but IMO it's close.*

goHardDrive is reputable, so that isn't a concern. I'd assume you're doing some form of mirroring such as RAID-1.

* Having said that, Seagate Barracudas would be my last choice but that's just me.

Thanks @manly . I'm still trying to figure out the best way of getting my data to the new drives. I have no experience in that regard, nor do I know what version RAID I should go with or how to even set it up. Something I'm still researching.

goHardDrive on eBay is discounting the HGST Ultrastar 8TB to $88. Not the best deal because these have a lot of runtime, but the vendor has your back for 5 years.

Yeah something like this may be the best option for now, as I think the 12TB DC drives have gone up to $149 for now.

Currently $120, which is a little better.
