Nothing really stands out nowadays like Bebop, Chanploo, and Eva did?

wolf's rain is similar in length and musci to Cowboy bebop, though the settings are much more "doomsday futuristic" than just "futuristic". it seems like it wasn't recieved as well, but i thought it had a subdued, solemn quality that i liked. definitely not as good as CB tho.

personally, i didnt think EVA was all that.

Some titles that I very much liked:
Scifi/Fantasy with romantic undertones
1. Fate/stay night(based on game)
2.Tsukihime(based on game)

Scifi/fantasy
1. Noein(thanks for correction to joesmoke)
2. Raxhephon(mecha, similar to Evangelion)
3. Black Lagoon(focuses on smuggling culture in Southeast Asia, Thailand I think, very good)
4. Ergo Proxy(dystopian future, philosophical babble warning)
5. Code Geass(2 seasons, underground resistance movement against a superpower imperialist nation, complex plot)
6. Utarawaremono or similar spelled title.
7. Seirei no Moribito
8. Baccano(1930's setting, deals with gangsters, immortality)

After watching much anime, most of the lesser titles escape me.
The very majority of anime uses mostly similar plot(like fan service or shounen audience) besides some of the gems like above for a thought provoking type of audience.

Although not strictly anime in its normal sense, how about Avatar - The Last Airbender?

This...I am past the point of DBZ and the likes...and even though it can come off as being a bit "childish" at times, Avatar is BY FAR one of the best anime out there in terms of story, development, and characters.

You'd be a fool to raise your nose to it...I thought it dumb at first sight until I watched it...it was glorious...can not wait for the movie to fall upon us.

I mostly agree with you about the series but the ending season and the especially the series finale was anticlimatic in how the main protagonist solved the Fire lord problem. The Avatar was clearly much stronger than the Fire Lord while Aang was mostly preparing to fight the guy for the majority of the series.

The goth makeup wearing pig-tailed protagonist with contrived complicated psycho babble... no thanks. I stopped after second or third episode.

Man, I wish I could un-see Samurai Chanploo.. that was so much fun.

I just saw the pilot of Rainbow. Meh. So the synopsis is just getting ass raped in the juvie? Some parts gave me goosebumps because it was too cheesy and dramatic (I beat you all up, then I protect u, then we're friends!)

Checking out Code Geass now...

Code Geass is pretty good, a little far-fetched but somewhat similar to Death Note if you haven't seen that already. But if you haven't seen Death Note it's awesome, watch it first.

I have a feeling you'd like Noir. It's been a long time since I watched it but I remember it being fairly dark and thought-inducing.

A friend of mine recommended that series, I watched the first episode and couldn't stand it, I was mentally vomiting. Then I remembered this is the same friend that likes the Twilight books... :hmm:

He also recommended Kino's Journey, but I never got around to watching it. I've heard good things about it, though, and it's very short, which I like.

1. I highly recommend Bakemonogatarifor a crazy female protagonist. Studio SHAFT did this show so expect some unconventional animation techniques.
2.(Warning: very long series)Gintama isn't really drama but does mostly parodies and comedy from I've seen of it.
3.Blue Gender is a dystopian survival anime.
4.BECK is also another great anime focusing on music and bands.
5.Hajime no Ippo, translated as Fighting Spirit or The First Step, is a boxing anime
