I have customized (to fit me) original ping eye2 coppers that are illegal in USGA-sanctioned tournaments (due to a claim that the grooving on the club face produces more spin ). I got them as hand-me-downs hehe. I spent ~$100 to get them fitted by a Pro instructor, and another $100 to get it shipped and customized by Ping.
I still hit these WAAAY better than any club released. These clubs are from the early 90's too. They are over 15 years old (my e-penis grows longer as i have the oldest clubs rawr!!!). But it's been a bit harder to hit them thesedays, as I don't have the strength as I did when I was younger (lol i'm 26, had these clubs since I was 15 or so, and had them customized when I hit 18). Copper head, stiff steel shafts...ugh, so unforgiving when I mishit them ouch, haha.
It was FAR easier to hit w/ customized clubs than anything else. My swing posture improved, and I didn't have to compensate for any misalligned angles from the club; therefore I am able to have a stance that is more "natural" in accordance to my height and arm length.
I was also able to avoid life-long bad habits. They're much easier to change when you're young and practiced every day (heh..i was really hardcore when I was young). It's tougher to fix bad habits due to poorly fitted clubs. They can potentially lead to injury as well (lower back injury, wrists, etc).
I still have my 10-yr old first-gen Great Big Bertha driver, and I can still hit it further than my peers who have the latest ones (although, admittedly, I did try the latest/greatest Taylor-Made-brand driver w/ the USGA-limited impact time material stuff they have nowadays..and I hit it EASILY 20+ yards ON THE FLY more than my current driver).
If you're serious about the sport and plan on playing at least once/month or so, then I'd highly recommend getting old pings, get measured by a pro golf instructor (not all do it though), send them to ping... and start learning on clubs that fit your comfortable stance rather than trying to learn on clubs that does not fit you.
