Moreweb?

Nice suggestion although there are cheaper alternatives.

I signed up for moreweb.com back when they offered an AT Hot Deals special 50% off.

I chose moreweb.com because:
1) They're an established web host, their parent company actually hosts AT.
2) 50% off if you pre-pay for two years.
3) DirectAdmin control panel.

$83.40 for TWO YEARS gets me 2GB/50GB, I use it mostly for email and image hosting.

I got in on the same deal and I run my car clubs site from it. I couldn't be happier and have had maybe one issue which was resolved within a few hours. It always has good speed and zero downtime.

Same here.

I haven't had any downtime (that I'm aware of) and never have to contact their support.

Wow there is lots of great ideas in here! I am looking to start up a website for my photography work. Right now I just use Xanga for a lot of my picture hosting. But I think it is nearing the time to make a proper website. What would you all recommend? I am considering HostPC, but someone mentioned that they are great for a personal site, but not for a buisness. Eventually, I want to be able to sell my pictures through my website. Would HostPC not be a very good choice for that?

Also, I am pretty ignorant on how to maintain a website. I have quite a bit of experience with Illustrator and InDesign and I think I am going to use DreamWeaver to design my site, if it is not too difficult to learn. Thanks for your input all!

I just joined http://www.hostgator.com/ and would highly recommend their $9.99/mo plan. A little more expensive, but it is an exceptional hosting company. I would not recommend Telnap. They were fine for awhile, but in the last year they appear to have gone way downhill (e.g. support forums have been down for months now). I jumped ship to Host Gator and they've been excellent so far.

I started at 1and1, which was horrible to cancel from. Moved on to SonataWeb, read great things, then it was sold off and killed. I headed to Telnap, which also slowly went downhill. Now, finally, I'm paying a fair amount and getting the service that comes with the cost. If you want a reliable host, you should just pay for it.

HostGator is actually quite good.

I would actually recommend Dreamhost. It's by far the best large host around here. My only concern is their Datacenter is in LA, and so I guess there's a slight west coast bias. I would've liked it if they were in Dallas or somewhere in Texas using ThePlanet's DCs.

Anyways, I think their plan is $7.95/month for the whole year? It's quite a lot if you think about it, but there are huge coupons floating around that give you like 80% off. I paid $22 for the whole first year =)

As of now I have 240gb to store there. That's my 7200.9 drive right there I can completely upload. Transfer is in the TBs, so I don't even watch any of my limits because it's just INSANE!

Is Telnap Dead??

I have a domain I host there just for email, it's been over 24 hours since it's been down, I opened a "high" ticket 4 hours ago and haven't gotten a response and it looks like the support forums are no more.

If they are..... whats a good free or $10 host? Ripplehost looks cheap but, I used them a few years back and uptime was problematic so I switched it to Telnap.

I could just switch it to hostpc have my other domain there and they have been great but, $30 for just email a year is kind of high I think.

Well, They aren't dead, I go a response to me ticket yesterday afternoon that there were hardware and software issues. They have replaced the server chassis and were working on the software problem.

My domain is back to working at the moment, so I'll see if they can sort things out.

Can anyone tell me what goes into transferring hosting? I've got a site at dreamhost right now..I renewed my domain there, and my hosting renewal is coming up quickly.

I also need to keep my email (blah@blah.com), although I can lose all my messages just fine.

You're pushing 1TB and they're allowing it? Are you serious? That's insanity.

DON'T use dreamhost

Another AT member, AgaBoogaBoo(sp???) I THINK, has a web company: cernax hosting. I would highly recommend them, although I currently host on hostgator
Thanks for the recommendation, I sincerely appreciate it.

To those in this thread: Remember, no need to switch, the service is still going and should be without issue because RossMAN, DeviousTrap, Dartworth, and I are doing what we can to keep it alive.

I'm looking for a new host as well. I got set up with Sonataweb back in '04 I think and I think that I am still with them although I'm not 100% sure. Anyways I've constantly had problems with them as far as anything working right for more than a few weeks. I have a small business site for my dad that has about 300 megs of data and usage. I have 1 gig of storage space now so I'm lookin for somethin like that again. I just need it to have a reasonable interface as I use FTP for basic HTML pages and stuff.

Anyways I'm lookin for a low budget, basically no frills place that works without being down.

Get your website away from Sonataweb or whatever the heck they are now. Tons of troubles there. Read this thread, tons of good places already suggested.

Any good deals running on something that gives maybe around 1GB of space? I not so concerned about much else as this would just be for a personal website. Was on addaction for 50/year, would like to find something alittle cheaper.

I would think that for hosting there are plenty of better deals out there than what godaddy has to offer. I have used them for registering my domains, but their hosting prices were too steep for me.

I'm looking for cheap hosting right now. I just threw godaddy out there because they seem popular. What are some good reliable hosts ?? I've heard of HostPC from this site but somebody said its not good for a business. Theres so many damn hosting companies I don't which one to choose and everybody has a different opinion on each one.

I understand where you are coming from, everywhere you turn there's a hosting company. How do you know which one is worth a crap. I signed up for hostpc.com on sunday(7/23) afternoon at around 1PM, and they still haven't set up my account. I submitted a support ticket yesterday at 4PM and asked them when I should expect my account to be opened up. They said within 12 hours or so. Well it's still not created. So right now, I don't know what to think. They had a 50% off deal and I guess that may have created a surge in account creations, but still, they should update you alittle better.

I am wondering if you managed to get this resolved?

I as considering hostpc, don't need it for too much and their 35/yr plan looks attractive (Too bad i missed the deal for the 50% off) but wondering if they're trustworthy.

yeah, got the account setup around 2PM yesterday. Now I just gotta figure out how to make a webpage. Is dreamweaver an easy decent program to use?

I went with the 35 dollar(17 w/ discount) plan also.

I'm wondering whether I should switch from Telnap, have been using them for about 2 years (paying for Terra Sell yearly, not free acct) after recommendations on this board, and was generally very happy until the big crash on 6/29. I have a small business and being down for about a week was awful...although Eric stayed in touch with me and I hung in there because I know how hard he was working to get the server issue resolved. Yesterday I changed the nameservers to the new ones (per Telnap's instructions) and now no one can log into the site though the home page can be viewed. I provided all the needed info from godaddy to update the SSL but have had an open ticket with Telnap since early this morning. I've emailed, IMed, put in a support ticket, etc. SSL still down and no response. So another day lost here.

Not sure I have the stomach to take much more down time. If I decide to switch, can someone recommend a comparable hosting company that is good for a small business zencart site? I have several domains that point to this site and use about 6 gigs.

What all do you need for hosting? I own my domain name and do everything else I need through GAFYD (Google Apps for Your Domain).

Super easy, but only provides pure and basic web pages (no databases, php, etc...). However, they do integrate with blogger, picasa web, and all the apps: calendar, documents, gmail, etc...
