Recommended Card for 1280x768 Gaming?

I'm looking to upgrade to a C2D + Vista setup and am looking for a video card that will take care of business for a while (dx10, crysis!!).

I'll only be playing games at 1280x768 since that's the only resolution my LCD TV will display sharply.

Obviously there is the 8800 GTS 320mb, but is that overkill since I won't be playing at a relatively high resolution?

Any recommendations?

If you're trying to buy for the future, nothing, not even an 8800GTX is overkill.

My suggestion is to just wait. There is not enough info on DX10 games and how they will perform or enough DX10 options to make such a decison.

By the time Crysis comes out, there will be more powerful cards in your price range that will run those games better.

If you must buy now, there is no other option other than the 8800GTS 320mb.

8600 GTS...oh wait, that's a steaming pile of crap...

So yeah, i'd agree w/ 8800 GTS 320 MB.

As for waiting though?
Wait for what?

There's not much of anything coming anytime soon from what i can see?

Matt2, where do you have dates stating when something worth waiting for will be out?

The 8800 GTS 320 isn't overkill if you're playing the latest Dx9 titles at max settings.

1280x768 is <1Mpixel, and ~25% less than the standard 1280x1024, so a 8600 GTS might cut it if you're not desparate for super-smooth at ultra-quality (many AT-ers are!).

As for Crysis/Dx10, don't factor that in until there are proper (AT) benches published.

With your budget, look for an 8800 GTS 320. The 8600 cards are for those on a tighter budget.

I dont have any dates.

He's wanting a card that will specifically play DX10 games like Crysis, and the others. I just dont see the point in buying a card for those games now, when we have no idea how they will perform in those games.

8800GTS 320mb could struggle heavily in those games and he'll be here asking this same question.

I would sugguest buying a cheaper card, saving your money and then upgrading when DX10 games come out. Since your resolution is only 1280x768, something in the 100 to 150 range should do fine. Tho. you never mentioned what games you play.

Hmm, yeah I think I may wait it out a bit.

Do you think I should wait before upgrading my computer too? I'm currently running on a 6800 AGP card so if I do plan to upgrade, I'll be video-less for a while.

I never believe in waiting unless something definitively better/better value is coming very soon.

Might help if you posted your current system, & your budget for what i assume is your planned complete overhaul?

Oh, & yes, i agree w/ Matt2 again, i wouldn't buy an 8800 GTX now, since there will likely be something better price/performance out when games like Crysis & UT3 actually arrive.

IOW, buy now, enjoy the card, & sell card & get better option for those games when they arrive.

Current Rig:

Athlon 64 3200+
2x512mb pc3200 ddr
Geforce 6800 Vanilla
300gb ide
Windows XP SP2

I would have to the budget is anywhere from 600-800. I'll be needing everything minus the case, dvdrw, and possibly psu.

I haven't really thought out the exact specs of the system I want to upgrade to yet, but it will for sure be C2D, Vista, 4gb ddr2-800, and a video card of course.

I would say it is seing at I play current DX9 titles with full detail at 1680x1050 with no slow down.

For future proofing the 8800 may be the better choice, but it is a lot for $$$. I think right now for the mid range card it's hard to beat the ATi 1950 series of cards.

i agree with the other whispers that say the 8800gts is NOT going to be fast enough for high-res current games. for 1280x1024 it will probably be good enough, but im betting on the 2nd gen dx10 cards to be the mid-range for performance in another year from now.

The 8800gts 320mb would be my choice for that resolution. It might be overkill for now, but the 8600 series are too slow for their price, and the other good midrange cards like the x1950pro don't support DX10. So the only reasonable choice in that price range for now is the 8800gts 320mb.

Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS 320MB.

Nothing else in the price range is worth it. Case closed.

I sure hope Matt2 is wrong about this though. I'm REALLY looking forward to CRYSIS!!

Refresh in November...you know it's comming can't you feel it?

I seriously believe that when DX10 titles show up that there will be a card faster than the 8800gtx and that's the one I want.

We ASSUME DX10 will require significantly more juice. We ASSUME games wont be buggy as hell. We ASSUME current midrange cards wont play DX10 games well. We ASSUME future cards wont be held up for whatever reason. We assume alot of things.

Buy today what you need today. There isnt ANYTHING even close to spitting out the pipeline that warrants waiting.

IMHO.
