Recover files from Mac.

Hello, i have an old Mac that just died. The motherboard fried. Now i would like to grab some files off the HD.
Can i hook up the hard drive to my windows machine, boot up with knoppix bootable cd and then transfer the files?

Windows cant read the Mac HD so, maybe a linux distribution can?

Any help would be great

How old? What OS was on the mac's hd? Can knoppix read the file system of pre-OSX versions?
