recovering corrupted iTunes downloads?

My friend's music library is apparently largely corrupted. Purchased music won't play in iTunes, mp3's won't play in any player. She of course did not back up.

If the files are still physically on her computer but corrupted, will Apple be at all accomodating in providing a new download? I highly doubt it, but given that the files are still there I thought maybe.

Anyone have suggestions for potential recovery? I don't have access to the machine myself but I can pass them along

Also, out of curiousity... what are the odds this was a software problem vs. a serious problem with the disk itself?

Unfortunately, I believe Apple makes very few exceptions to letting people re-download their music, if any. Not exactly the best CS in this regard.

As for recovery options, are they using a Mac or PC? There may be a few programs out there to recover the music, depending on how badly corrupted they are.

So they can see all the files, but they are all corrupted when they try to open them?

Are the file sizes showing actual values, or 0?

Just explain to Apple what happened. They'll usually let you redownload it. Don't let it happen again.
