Ok first lets just clarify a few things eth0 and eth1 don't really mean antyhing other than the order linux starts the cards, you can have any card assigned anything...
I am confused because you said the cable modem was working and you had eth1 directly connected from linux to your computer...
In other words you want DHCP assigned to the card that the cable modem plugs into and the static ip address assigned to the card that goes into the hub...
remember though that to directly connect two computers together without a hub you need a crossover cable not a straight cat 5 cable..

i was also confused, but i deduced from:

24.220.200.0 * 255.255.254.0 U 0 0 0 eth1

and

Primary dns 24.220.0.10
Secondary dns: 24.220.0.11

that eth1 was the external interface

DNS is just a domain name server, it basically translates a url such as yahoo.com into an ip address 64.58.79.230. The dns settings will be the same for all client machines attached to the hub. Any dns server will work. But one preferred by your ISP may work faster for you. DNS on your linux machine is assigned by dhcp.

ok...forget everything i said that wasnt within the last 5 posts since ive installed linux several times and each time it assign a difff eth# whic is why i think i confused you

eth0 is working (it used to be eth0 then eth1 then eth0 again since i reinstalled linux that many times)
eth0 has a direct connection to the cable modem and i am able to browse the internet with it

eth1 is not working thereofre the static ip address thing u mentioned is what i realize i need to do

here is where i am lost...the DNS settings...you said i will need to set a DNS address for EACH windows comptuer right? ok..keeping that in mind...will i need to set a different DNS address to EACH windows computer or the one you provided me a couple posts ago be the same DNS address i put in EVERY windows computer?

also will i need to assign eth1 with a DNS address or can i leave that alone?

if i didnt provide enuf information for you to anwser the question let me know

YEah its actually easy now...

Linux box
ETH0 working leave it alone
ETH1 only settings needed are static ip address and netmask

Other windows machines

Setup a static ip address (192.168.0.(2-255)) each machine gets a different last number i.e. 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.3 ect....

netmask 255.255.255.0 each machine gets same number

and as for dns it looks like you have them they are the same for every machine
Primary dns 24.220.0.10
Secondary dns: 24.220.0.11

then run the guidedog and open up routing

Just remember with that ip masq blown wide open security is minimal, configuring guarddog is a bit tricky but its a good firewall and easy to setup once you figure it out..

just open the terminal and type guarddog

either that or you can do a search for the icon.

I cannot remember where it goes

In guarddog there is two settings internet and local.
you must create another setting called "anything" and assign it this setting 192.168.0.1/24 (whish is short for 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 which means all the computers on your network.)

You'll notice on the left there will be checkmarks that indicates what areas can communicate with other areas. check them all so that internet can talk to local and internet can talk to "anything"

then under protocols you can go thru the list and give permissions. You'll need dns http https mail settings from internet to local internet to "anything" and vice versa.

its kinda complicated but you have to think of the setup as servers and clients, what part is giving the service to another.

They have a good guidebook at that site.
