it's quite risky, bought 4 so far and all are defective. even if you can get them to work, their is problems like random crashes and some don't even post. not worth it imho, i rather buy something new for must less that are obsolete like at compgeeks.com and tigersurplus.com. 1 out of 4 that I have not thrown away, had this usb 2.0 problems that everytime I try to install the driver, it would crash upon boot up. so it stays disabled for the time being. heh, and it costed me 39 bucks. most likely you have to return them, and usps charges alot for even postal mail like 9-11 bucks 1 mobo, 13-15 for 2 mobo and so on. ask yourself this, what are the chances of someone returning a perfectly working motherboard?

I checked yesterday and they had dfi ultra infinity as well as lan party. Checked a few minutes later and the ultra infinities were all gone. And I was going to buy one.

Not that I actually need any of this...

Just a little side note on my experience with refurbs.

My current board that I am using was a refurb from Newegg. I ordered it, got it in 2 days with all the accessories. Slapped it in and it wouldn't even post. CRAP!! Packed it all up and sent it back in for a replacement. Newegg rushed out another refurb for me. Got it in 2 days but without any accessories at all. Dang it!! Oh well, I don't need them anyway. Slap this board in and again it doesn't post. WHAT THE HECK? Turns out that I needed to reset the BIOS and then everything worked out fine.

Moral of the story: Some people will send a motherboard back thinking it is junk when actually it was a loose nut behind the keyboard.

I have been sitting on the fence with this....
I just ordered my first refurb motherboard from Newegg.
It is an ABIT NF7...
The only accessory I really want is the extra USB2 backplate....

I guess we will see....

A co worker of mine ordered a $10 P4 board during the last refurb mobo offering. They accidentally sent him a A7N8X-E Deluxe. He didn't wan't AMD, so he sold it too me for $10! BTW, it posts, and it came as board only in a white box.

What's a good motherboard for an XP 1900+. I want the option to upgrade though as far as I can go. I've been out of the loop regarding motherboards/cpus for awhile so any information would be great

What number/dept did you call to get accessories? It's so hard to get a hold of a person when I called MSI HQ.

THanks.

edit: I finally got a hold of a guy, the accessories are zero cost but he had to charge $15 for shipping and handling. Is this right!?

Go with the nforce2 chipset, the most stable, don't buy pcchips chipsets-the least stable. Asus, A-bit, Gigabyte, MSI, Shuttle are all pretty stable. You will probably want a mobo with a 333mhz FSB so you can always upgrade your processor later. All else is up to you as far as video, lan, and audio is concerned.

Who to call at ASUS for a backplate for my refurb??

Was attempting to ascertain the motive for one wanting to purchase a large or disorderly crowd, or why the need would arise for said crowd to undergo refurbishing.

All jocularity aside, NewEgg refurbished (which is the correctly spelled cousin of "referbed") products are recertified by the individual manufacturers, if memory serves. In the few refurbished motherboards I have purchased myself (approximately twenty or so) from NewEgg, experienced one partially defective and the RMA process was quite painless. A majority appeared brand new, and included all the accessories. Roughly three or four of the boards were manufacturered by ASUS. As mentioned earlier, nearly all ASUS refurbished boards lack accessories. In the past, ASUS had presented board extras and accessories to new owners (even refurbished owners) for no charge. With the rise of the resale of refurbished products, they seemed to have discountinued this practice. A nominal fee is now associated with the board extras (backplates, bracketing, various flavors of ribbon cables and connectors, etc), although some still report success, dependent upon which ASUS representative with whom you speak. I think the surcharge is quite understandable from a business perspective, and even acceptable; although admiittedly I too dislike the extra charge.

In short, would summarize by saying most refurbished motherboards are nearly brand new and quite functional, but add a caveat emptor on the accessories as they are a YMMV situation.

I picked up a Shuttle AN35n Ultra a few monthes back. It looked new in box, with all accessories. It has worked perfectly for me.

I've bought a few other things from the refurb area also. No problems with any of them.

I think Newegg sells their refurbs from more than one source. Some customer returns, some manufacturer recertified.

I think that the refurb Asus boards are sent from Asus as white box and no accessories.
Many of the others seem to be customer returns.

I've noticed that many times there is very limited stock (like only 1) and after a few minutes (or after I purchase), it goes out of stock. I assume those are customer returns. Others that seem to stay in stock are probably coming from the manufacturer (or they are not desireable).

As long as the warranty is there, I'm comforatable buying most anything. I wouldn't buy anything that has a lot of accesories that I really need for it to function. My Shuttle board is pretty basic. The extras in the box were not essential (except for the I/O shield)

I've bought a CPU that definetly didn't come back from the manufacturer because it was covered in silver paste! Cleaned it off for like an hour and it worked perfect.

A Coolermaster case that I bought looked brand new with all accesories. A DVD burner was shipped in bubble wrap with nothing else, but I didn't need anything else for it. I picked up a great deal on a 1GB Mushkin Level 1 PC3500 kit. I came in little antistatic cases wrapped in bubble wrap. For memory, what else do you need?
Ok, I ranting on...I love Newegg refurbs. In fact, I bought another hard drive and a DVD-ROM from them last week. Waiting for delivery...

here's my $1.25

I have ordered MANY( atleast 10-15) refurb boards from newegg. And all of them have come complete with everything, sometimes not in a sealed baggy, sometimes not in the "pretty" box.

Also I know they do REFURB them themselves or send them to the maker... how do I know this? Well I worked at a computer store for many years and quite frankly you can smell a board and tell that it has been dipped in contact cleaner(or something like it), boards that this has been done too also have a different shine to them.

So in my experience I believe that newegg does check the boards, maybe not a real good check, because I have known people to get a bum board, but they do check and really refurb bad boards.

bottem line REFURBs from newegg are a good deal.

I have purchased many items from NewEgg refurbs 50 + and never had a problem, it is hit and miss with accesories. On the other hand I have sent back at least 4 new retail items to new egg because of problems.

I've picked up both as refurbs before. As has been mentioned several times, with the Asus borad you are sure to get no assys. Not so "delux" without assys. That means no 1394, external usb or gameport dongles. No Sata cables. You will have to modify or leave out your existing I/O sheild.
But it's a great board, and for $20 they will ship you all the assys including the book and CD-rom with drivers and such.
If you are on the fence, I'd get the Abit board. My nf7-s came in retail box with everything.
