Refresh Rates?

Does the refresh rate in a game really make that much of a difference? For example: Is there a big difference between 60hz and 85hz?

well yeh, if ur graphics card can reach say 100fps in Counterstrike then if your refresh rate is at 60hz then u wont get 100fps in Counterstrike you will only get a max of 60hz whereas if u had 85hz you will get a max of 85fps, if u had 100hz refresh rate you would be able to get a full 100fps in Counterstrike.

So is he.

But refresh rates basically make things easier on the eyes. If you go from 60Hz to 85Hz, per se, you'll find that your eyes seem to be more relaxed (generally). It's all personal preference, but typically you'll want to get away from the 60Hz refresh rate that Windows defaults to.

60hz and 85hz is a big difference. 60hz hurts my eyes 75hz is alright and 85hz is great

I've been wondering this, is there such a thing as a refresh rate being too high? Or is higher always better? I know it probably depends on your eyes and your preference, but are there any kinds of problems that can be caused by a refresh rate being set too high?

Typically you want to set your refresh rate to the highest your monitor will allow. There is no "too high," I don't think.

Well, a higher refresh rate might put more stress on your monitor, but I doubt you'll have too many--heck, any--problems if you stay within the advertised specs. But you're probably hitting diminishing returns part 100Hz.

With higher refresh rates, you are able to see more frames, feel more responsive when mousing, and relieve your eyes from flicker. Flicker-free is considered 85Hz. However, this only applies to CRTs. LCDs get a little more complicated. Now it depends on your pixel response time. All the benefits of the above are applied except that higher refresh rates won't affect your the comfortness of your eyes as with CRTs. I would keep the refresh rate below the pixel response time, if possible, but never diverge from your monitor's optimal settings.

With CRTs, you will have to decide which is more important, higher refresh rates, or higher resolutions. However, I strongly recommend that you don't set your refresh rate lower than 85Hz.
