especially when one good hit or two nukes half your health, and a health pack only restores a quarter. (Example: in FO3, a feral ghoul roamer smacks you for 100+ health, but a stimpack only gives 61 back for me)

I think its pretty lame that some game devs artificially increase difficulty with lack of said medpacks, but at the same time health regen is lame too. Duke Nukem is pretty spot on with their health management, allowing you only to carry 1 medpack for emergencys, and the health items are pretty spread out as to not make it easy.

Good point. The way they blend pick-ups with regeneration with-in a single health bar is a good one. The fact that you can't do it until after you get infected is a somewhat plausible way of incorporating the system into the game too.

at first I hated it because I felt it was cheating, coming from my doom days of health hunting, heh. but after seeing/using it for some games, it does work out pretty well.

doesn't matter to me either way. if it makes it too easy for you then play on a harder difficulty.

I don't mind it.

But I'll third the vote for the Resistance method. It combines both systems. Your health bar is divided into 4 quarters. You automatically regenerate health, but only to the top of the current quarter. So, for example, if you have full health and then lose a little more than 1/4 your new maximum is 3/4 until you can find a health pack.

The only regenerating health system I've ever liked is FarCry 2's. In that you can 'regenerate' the last 2 bars of health if you have enough time/cover and you are under a time limit because at that point you are bleeding pretty severely. This system is made more tolerable by the actions that go along with stopping the bleeding, while unrealistic they are more immersive than most systems out there. (For those that don't know, when you attempt to regenerate those last 2 bars, your character will do things such as tear bullets out of him, crack bones back in place, put out fires on his clothes, pull metal out of his ribs, every action is dependent on what set him under 1 health bar as well.)

I find systems where you can regenerate to full life to be retarded. It eliminates a number of possible scenarios and dulls the players wits as they choose certain methods of attack based on knowing they can regain the lost HP. In other words, there is no slow death, only quick death, the slow death has been eliminated because it was too difficult to manage for certain players.

This is part of a games design. if a game that has regenerating health all of sudden didn't the game would suffer.

I feel that it makes games easier, but I'm more or less okay with it. Voted indifferent.

Bah, do you know how many games I've played where I had to backtrack halfway across a level to pick up a health pack that was there?

I prefer regenerating. Games are in no way realistic, and as someone else pointed out, health packs are no more realistic. Besides, if games were bound to reality they wouldnt be all that fun. If you dont want it, it should be tied to the difficulty setting.

BTW, I hate sprint meters. Bunny hopping owns!
