I have a 7 yr. old WD that is running fine. A bit slow, but it works great. But Ive heard stories of people who had 3 or 4 WD's fail in a row, so it pretty much is a matter of luck

I think there's more to it than luck. Some people have "bad luck" with HD's, but there are circumstances that enhance the chance of failure - usage patterns, other equipment the drives coexist with, heat, and I'm sure there are others. Not saying luck isn't a big factor. I'm sure it is. Never press your luck when it comes to HDs.

How can I figure out it is a 7200.10 vs 7200.8 or others? Is there a site that maps model numbers to this? I dont usually see websites publish this when they are selling the drives.

Go to newegg and search for "7200.9" or "7200.10"...

Results for 7200.9

Results for 7200.10

As for maxtor sucking, I have a first gen Maxtor SATA 250gb drive well out of warranty and it is running great in my second gaming system. In my main system I have 3 Maxtor Maxline III SATA drives and they are fantastic, 5 year warranty. As many said earlier, heat will kill any drive.
You really need to have a larger sample size to make any kind claim of reliability with regard to HD. Personally, I've never had a HD fail and that spans about 15 or so. However, at work, we have had many hard drives fail likely b/c we have hundreds. It's not common but it happens.

As far as real failure issues beyond what could be considered normal, Maxtor made an 80gb drive that was installed in many dell optiplex systems that was complete junk. We ended up replacing all the drives in these PCs before failure as they all started failing within a few months of each other like clockwork. From some basic research, I'm pretty sure we were not the only ones affected by this.

The model is printed in "clear text"(as in, not some obscure model number) on the Cudas.
So if you see it, you can easily tell which model it is, if you can't for some reason, they should state what model it is, I wouldn't buy from a store that doesn't.

And the oldest drive I have in use is a 2.5 GB Quantum Fireball, it's spinning along fine in my firewall, and has seen 24/7 use for some 5-6 years now, before that it sat in a corporate desktop for a couple of years

Over many years I've had a Seagate, a Maxtor, and 2 WesterDigitals. Never had any failures. The drives outlasted the systems.
