Reliable RAM? OCZ

Is this RAM reliable, and is is compatible with the EVGA X58 mobo?

OCZ is not the best, but they are good.

Personally, I would go with GSkill:

DDR3-1600 8-8-8-21

That's a pretty good price for DDR3 1600 memory. Although I haven't used OCZ triple-channel kits, I would recommend staying away from G. Skill. I received 2 bad triple-channel kits (each one had a bad module and I had to RMA them all) and I just gave up and paid a little extra for Corsair.

If you had any reason to OC the RAM past 1600, I might not recommend OCZ as most of their RAM doesn't OC well these days, but the memory speed doesn't mean much for the i7, so you will be happy with the available speeds. Even if you OC the bejesus out of your system, the memory multipliers are unclocked, so you can adjust down.

Go for it.

Iv'e had memory kits from Crucial,Mushkin,Gskill and OCZ.All of them will sometimes put out sticks that don't work well.I will say in my case from best to worst were OCZ,GSkill
Crucial and Mushkin.Getting ready to buy 2 4gb OCZ 1066 kits.ymmv.

+1 Mushkin is very overlooked these days. I have always had great luck with their products, even all the way back to the days of the 6-6-6 special.

That's one reason why I'm puzzled when people fret over an extra $20 per kit for quality RAM.

It will work in X58 but beware since that chipset only "officially" supports 1066. You will probably end up with the same results as the second guy reviewing the memory on NewEgg.

IT says it's 1600 in the description. My BIOS reports it as 1066; buyer beware.

As always, make sure MBs using new generation chipsets have an updated BIOS.
The newer the chipsets, the more fixes that a BIOS flash covers.

I'll answer with another question: Is there a data sheet from any RAM chip manufacturer for 1.65V DDR3? The correct answer to both questions is the same.

For whats its worth i've used the platinum version of that same memory in two i7 builds using EVGA x58 motherboards and they work great.

Only $10 more than the gold..

Well, there's the JEDEC 1.5v standard for DDR3... Does that count?

mixed bag then. corsair is great. OCZ, G.Skill could be dice roll.
my funds are limited so will have to roll the dice and then upgrade. can alsways run MEmtest 86 to test.

If your funds are tight, you want to make sure and spend them wisely... correct?
1.5v Corsair XMS, Mushkin or G.Skill :thumbsup:

i personally like corsair, used for a few years diff types, never had any problems. on other hand i had a ton of trouble with ballistix line from crucial, rma galore.

Never had a problem with G.Skill, had over 5-6 memory kits from them, and Aces in terms of warranty. I think the poster above just had bad luck in getting two bad kits.

No, the 1.65v limit is a recommendation from Intel and is tied to the memory controller specifically. It has nothing to do with how much voltage an IC is rated for or how much voltage a memory kit is rated for.

Not as much as the testing failure at 1.5V that caused the memory module to be labelled for 1.65V operation.
