I'm working overseas for a couple months. I need a secure, easy to use method for accessing my files, both mp3s for enjoyment and work files in case i forget something.

Any suggestions?

I've started using WinSSHD at work and it's really grown on me. Everything is tunneled through SSH and it has a built in SFTP server. You can do Remote Desktop through SSH as well.

The weak point of them all these days is if you wish to access anything from any remote client site.... chances are around 150% that every important port is blocked on their firewall.

Then on top of that, 9/10 of the companies I have as clients also then have all remote proxy sites and services blocked too.

It's become near impossible to have any reliable remote access these days through infrastructure you dont control and its driving me nuts!!!!!!!!

Not really, even the strictest proxies allow HTTPS so if you setup an SSH server on port 443 you can tunnel just about anything over that.

I use a combination of Hamachi and TightVNC. Works quite well for me. Be sure to assign a dedicated port to the Hamachi remote system and forward that same port in your router. Doing that cuts down on the chance of not being able to establish a connection with the remote system.

Err yeah, where's the ssh option? Vnc and remote desktop (if you have 2 windows machines) are all fine and good, but not by themselves.

My two main clients where I spent 80% of my time both have 443 blocked. Believe me been there and done that They are like nuclear strength of paranoid (pharma company and a defence contractor) and if you want 443, there is about 6 (no joke) forms to complete before the request even begins it's journey through the corridors of red-tape and 'more than my job's worth' automotons

That's odd to say the least, wouldn't it be simpler for them to just get one of those SSL accelerators that decrypt the stream and inspect it than to go through all of that hassle?

'Simple' is an unheard of concept at most of these places :/

What really matters is that there is lots of paper to shuffle around and that 6 people are kept in a job which could be done by one person if there was any form of planning and that the decision on what colour toilet paper to buy wasnt a decision to be made by commitee over a good 6 months so that no one can be blamed for growing a pair and making the wrong decision
