I am trying to set up my computer to be accessable anywhere. I have downloaded the DUC from no-ip and have created an account with them. I have the programing running on my desktop and it is updating my ip accordingly. I have also accessed my router and set port forwarding on port 80 to my local ip address 10.0.0.x as instructed on the website. I have verizon DSL and have accessed the modem setup and the firewall is off and set to allow all traffic. However I still cannot access my computer. I have also tried www.canyouseeme.org to test the ports and I get a response back that says the connection has timed out. What am I missing??

Most providers don't allow running servers and block port 80. You can try using a different port.

ditto...otherwise there would be web hosting and other things on residential lines.

As I am new to advanced networking, I was wondering if there are certain ports that I should use and others that I should stay away from.

I have also tried port 3389 for Remote desktop and www.canyouseeme.org gives me a connection timed out error as well.

Ok, I now have a new problem. I downloaded a program called port detective to try and see if I could find an open port. One of the ports listed was 81 as an alternate http port. I finally, after tinkering with the modem setup got an open response from the program on port 81. However, I cannot get canyouseeme.org or the support tool at dyndns.com to get a response from port 81. I know something is different because the port detective program previously returned a closed response and now it is open. how can I get the web sites to see port 81.

All this is being done on the same computer, a hp dv6661se laptop with vista ultimate.

Verizon Blocks port 80.

The trick is to set the Web Server to high port (like 60000), and open this port in the Router toward the IP of the computer with the server.

No-IP provides port redirection, thus in your NO-IP account you can set a redirection of port 80 to port 60000.

This is a solution as long as you run a low profile casual server. If you would have a lot of traffic Verizon would notice it and would get upset (and rightfully so).

Prices of professional hosting are so low that unless this is a Web server for simple self education you are much better of using a regular Hosting service for $3 a month.

Make sure you don't have any other firewalls on your laptop blocking the ports you're trying to open. The best way to eliminate any issues at the perimeter firewall are to try accessing the resources internally. Try to access RDP or web server on the correct ports from another computer inside your network with the internal IP (10.x.x.x). If you still can't access it at that point, you know it's something on the laptop blocking it. If you CAN access it, there's a misconfiguration at the firewall.

I changed the port to 60000 and I still have the same problem. The program -port detective- shows the port as open but canyouseeme.org still says connection timed out.

To check the firewall on my laptop, I disabled it and the message changed from connection timed out to connection refused. Is there something I need to do in vista to allow traffic on that port. I appreciate your responses and will continue to search the internet for a solution as well. I will post if I get it fixed.

I thought of that even though I don't have the vista firewall turned on. I allowed port 60000 in that as well but it didn't change anything. I still get a connection refused message.

Can other PCs on your network access it via the internal IP as I mentioned earlier?

I'm not trying to run a web server. I am just trying to make my computer accessible from anywhere. I have a server set up for educational purposes and I am experimenting with that. I was just trying out the software on my laptop before I installed it on the server. I have no problems with my internal network. All my computers can see and access each other perfectly. I am trying to use the DUC provided at no-ip.com and set it up so that when I type in the chosen address {http://mycomputer.no-ip.org} I can gain access to my computer from anywhere. The goal is to be able to pull files from my server if I happen to leave home and forget to bring them with me.

I do not know where you are trying to access the system from.

However you should know that most Router Do not let you access your Network from within by using External address.

I.e. you have to try accessing your system from another location not from within your own Network.

I do know that I won't be able to access my network from home. I have tried it at school and have still been unsucessful. I am going to try it from my church on the way home today to make sure the school isn't somehow preventing my access. However, the site canyouseeme.org should work alright for checking the ports becasue it is designed to check ports on the current ip address. That site should be able to get a response from port 60000 and it needs to before I will be able to access my network from the outside. Am I incorrect in this understanding? It automatically detects your ip address so I think it is only useful on the local machine.

I got the idea from this article
http://www.tomshardware.com/re...ote-access,1803-3.html

I also think I may have found the problem. I began re-reading the article to make sure I did everything and I forgot to set up the vpn connection on my laptop. I can't believe I was that stupid. I will do that when I get home and report back as to my findings.

OK, I set up the vpn connection on my laptop and according to the article that automatically allows traffic on port 1723. After that, I checked with canyouseeme.org and got a successful response for port 1723. Now I just need to figure out how to change that port to 60000. Although it's not necessary, since i can use port 1723, I would still like to know. It must be somewhere other than in the firewall setup. Although I don't have it turned on, I still set to allow port 60000 but that didn't work. If any of you know how, it would be great. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

For remote desktop access just use logmein.com its free and gets around the firewall with no port forwarding needed. Simple install for remote control from any browser.
