Removing old video card software

I'm upgrading the Voodoo 3's in both me and the wife's computers to GeForce cards and some mentioned to me to remove the old drivers in both Windows and the Registry. Is removing the device from the Device Manager and then removing the 3Dfx folder from HK_LOCAL MACHINE_Software what he means? Is this sufficiently removing the old card? I assume so but just want to make sure.

Best thing to do when ever you install a new video card and trust me you'll really notice a fps difference (if you play games) if you do a clean install (doesn't have to be a reformat) of windows or whatever os you use.

Okay thanks. So I assume you mean go ahead and delete the 3dfx stuff, swap cards, install the software for the new ones and then go ahead and run setup again for the OS without a format? BTW one computer I'm still using 98SE and one uses Win2K Pro.

Nope, just pop your new card in, then do a fresh install. Windows will install default display drivers that will work on any card so you can see whats going on.

Once that is done just install the drivers you got from the cd or the latest from the website, or better, look for some 3rd party drivers. They are tweaked to run better and faster.

1. Add/Remove Programs
2. look for folder in Program Files or C: and delete
3. use Find and type in 3dfx*.* delete anything you find
4. delete 3dfx entries in the registry
5. Make sure you are at adapter default vga, load in new drivers.
