I think I'd rent. It's kinda like an insurance too as if anything happens to the car the cost is not on you, and think they even have some kind of road side assistance where they'll come and give you a new car, but I'm not positive on that. Generally for the service you get renting a car is pretty cheap.

Though for that distance I'd fly before driving, personally. Flying has become so cheap now that I find it's worth it. Here it used to be over a grand just to leave the local airport never mind the next connecting flight. Now it's a bit over 100 bucks thanks to Porter giving Air Canada some competition. There's something awesome about being able to be in Toronto within an hour instead of 8.

Northern Ontario is frickin huge....i think it took me 11 hours to get to Timmins...19 hours to Thunder Bay. I'd use my own car if it's in good condition, no reason to rent.

Sounds about right. Went to Thunder Bay for company reasons a few years back, but we flew, it's odd because you still have to go to Toronto first, it seems kinda counter productive but Toronto is about the only flight that leaves here, then you can go anywhere from Toronto. Still awesome to be in Thunder Bay in like less than 5 hours. Hit up the Persian Man for some good pastry. Mmmmmm. (that's not the actual reason we went. )

My car has 235k miles on it and is a VW and I'd still take it over renting. Are you worried your car is going to blow up in the next month or two of normal driving? If the car had something obviously wrong with it that might stop it from making it I would think differently but 850 miles is nothing over all.

Just make sure you check the air pressure in your spare tire if you haven't for years like most of us .
