Hi,

i got me a used CRT monitor which has parts of the glass scratched.

The scratches are NOT deep, but there is display distortion caused by the vertical scratches.

Is there any way to polish away the scratches or use a coating or something to fill them up ? Or any commercial monitor/glass repair kit ?

thanks !

Saw a ad on tv for eye glass repair, a liquid that fills scratches and they state scratch becomes invisible, dont know the name of the stuff tho, or if it would work, might do a search in that area

Toothpaste? I've heard that it works for LCD monitors, but I don't know about CRT's.

A fine-grit sandpaper along the rest of the monitor would do the trick. The scratches are only a problem as long as the rest of the monitor hasn't been evened out with them.

Note: Please don't do this. It actually worked on some poor sap once

nope ur screwed. anti glare coating/etched glass surface won't take well to any polishing, you will only make a scratch into a large area of ickiness.

ok guys, here's the update...

The monitor HAD an anti-glare coating, but it was VERY scratched and i polished it away. Dont ask me how long it took

The problem now is that the glass itself now is scratched in SOME parts, and i also polished THERE for hours....with the result that it has gotten worse and i actually chipped away some more pieces of glass.

The chipped spots are NO problem - the problem is rather that i have a matte spot now AND the main problem is that the vertical scratches result in artifacts in combination with the monitor's 'mask'. (the horizontal scratches dont bother me at all !)

I gave up on polishing now and i am experimenting - and i have some ideas.....starting from applying vaseline/hairspray/clear nailglue etc.

I had some preliminary results applying chapstick (!) or oil....and putting cellophane foil over the screen to even out the scratches.

I THINK i could do something with clear (!) vaseline and then putting an acrylic screen (or glass) over it or something....i am also looking into the option to apply nailglue and then slightly polish the spots where i put the glue......just experimenting. Any more ideas ?

thanks

If you put some magic mushrooms in your Cheerios, you will probably be able to decipher the secret code represented by the artifacts.

What you are doing is an exercise in futility.

Yeah, put vaseline on it and it will puddle at the bottom of the screen as soon as it gets warm.
I got a like-new 17" CRT from someone who advertised it on Craigslist.com for under $50. So just get another. It's not worth the hassle. Try Postaroo.com if it's in your area and Google Base too. Maybe even the For Sale/Trade section here. Most CRTs aren't worth the cost to ship them so don't bother with non-local.

Jeweler's rouge would probably work but it is quite expensive. And the glass front of a CRT tube is of a certain thickness for a reason..

You might try jeweler's rouge - or better yet, an optical polishing compound of the type used by lens makes. Sounds like it can't get worse.

well...zepper, you are right of course.

it just irks me because i got this monitor CHEAP a few days ago...and otherwise it would be GREAT.

I got a halfa$$ solution now (after i tried a LOT), putting vaseline on it and then put a clean sheet of cellophane over it. It is better now, relatively (i tried hairspray, nailpolish, etc..etc..

Well i also paid only 30? for this thing...so i guess more involved solutions are just not worth the hassle.
