Not really looking to overclock. Just want the quietest solution (when not playing games). If fan comes on during gaming, that is fine. I also don't want to block a slot if possible

Your going to lose a PCI slot, I don't think there is any way around that. Having said that the best solution is the Zalman VF-700.

Arctic Silencer products are also very good and quiet. You will lose a PCI slot either way.

no need for controller since the unit comes w/ 5v and 12v options.. and even at its full speed i can't even notice it... vf700-cu hands down!

The Zalman VF700 Cu is the best by far of any of the VGA coolers!

On my 6800 GT I am running 500 core and 1.3 ghz memory!

Stable as mount st helens in a rain storm!

Thats a strange analogy, seeing as how it once catastophically erupted. Maybe I'm not getting the real joke?

Back on topic, yes the VF-700cu is pretty awsome. Compared to stock there are huge differenves in cooling and noise.

Thermalright V1, an XP-90 for your video card. With two fans, its as good as watercooling.

I'm using a Zalman VF700-AlCu on my X800 XL. I would've bought the Cu version, but I got the AlCu in the forums cheaply. I have it set to "silent" mode (5V) and it's almost inaudible. It's a lot quieter than the stock hsf and the card runs cooler than before even at 5V.

I don't think cooling solutions have been subject to huge price drops.
I'd just buy the zalman now. Be aware that you will be violating warranty (who isn't on these forums ). I can't think of any cooling solution that won't take up a slot unless you use a fan controller but you'll have to manually monitor temps and stuff yourself to make sure you aren't slowing the fan down too much.

Actually they do decrease in price when they've become overwhelmed with suppy and want to generate traffic to the site. They usually have large sales once or twice a month. (SVC)

the arctic cooling silencer will exhaust the hot air out of your case which is a plus, but it may conflict with your chipset cooler depending on what motherboard you have. between AC and zalman, you can't really go wrong.

If you're just looking to quiet your card, you might try downloading ATITool. It has fan control and it's free!

Coolermaster Cool Via VGA cooler is SWEET. I love the look of it, it takes a ton of space, if your northbridge heatsink is like 1 inch or closer to the AGP slot you're SOL. But in terms of price and performance, this cooler cannot be beat,

I have the ATI silencer for my X800 XL from Arctic cooling. It works great, but just be aware that once its installed its a pain in the butt to take out because the fan housing blocks the clip to release the PCI Express socket. With all that said, its does a bang up job. Now, I just have to get the idea out of my head that I need a 7800...

Do either of the X800XL, X800XT or X850XT come fanless with nice huge heatsinks? I don't care about using up an extra PCI slot, I want silence (or close to it).

Zalman & Coolermaster & Thermaltake all have fanless VGA solutions, well the Coolermaster & TT are fan'ed but can be ran passive. you can't OC using a passive cooler, but from reviews they all do a decent job cooling with zero sound.

I have the X800XL and was hitting 70C stock under load and was having stability problems.

Tried the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer but it interfered with the passive chipset cooler on my Chaintech VNF4 mobo.

I got the Zalman Al-Cu and I had to fab a little bracket to get it to fit but I was able to get it installed. At 5V the fan is much quieter than the stocker, and it only heats up to 50C.

Unfortunately, the card is still unstable, but at least it is now very quiet.

I really like the Zalman cooler. Very easy to install and it functions extremely well, plus I may be able to use it on future cards.

If the Zalman brought your temps down. Then what exactly is the current temps of the card and at which point does the card become unstable?
