replacement for dead 939 motherboard

I have an ECS nforce4 motherboard (socket 939) that recently died. I was able to return it for a refund, but still have the CPU and such. Am I better off going with an AM2 socket board and scrapping my CPU or another 939 socket based board?

There are so many out there. You can get a board for $40 @ zipzoomfly.com. Search for Foxconn 6150.

I'd check newegg's open box section for an nforce4 board. You may not even have to reinstall windows, just the board drivers. Check the pictures to see if you can use it with your old backplate. Most don't come with any accessories.

What do you want to do with your PC? If you're a gamer, this may be an excuse to upgrade. If not, perhaps you can pick up a used board from the for sale forums. You can always find something to spend the money on at Newegg (media, new video card, etc.).

It's the family computer used for web browsing, checking email, and playing kids games. I need to get it back online fairly quickly. I was actually hoping newegg could replace it with the exact board, but no such luck. I have 2 media pcs setup, a pc based router, and an outdated laptop, which has been filling in for the missing family computer.

The processor I had with the ECS board is the AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2.4GHz

It looks like I could the the foxconn mentioned above for about $56. I was hoping to avoid a windows reinstall. If I'm not avoiding that, I'm willing to spend an extra $50 and get a better system.

To avoid any nasty glitches that may cause you to reinstall completely, use the XP repair install trick. It's documented in many places, like here. You install the new hardware, then boot from the XP disk and do the repair.

The key (and this is important), is to boot from the XP disk, the take the SECOND repair option. The second one...not the first. It's really the less obvious repair option. No, really, don't take the first one. Mkay?

That repair trick works great. You may have to repatch things, and have all device drivers handy just in case.

Personally I think the 4000+ is a decent CPU right now....I am running one at 2.85GHz. I'd love a Opt. 185, but nothing is really laggy for me.

I am only running a 6800GT OC and I think if I went to x1950/7950GT speeds along with taking my 1GB OCZ Plat Rev 2 EL mem to 2GB I'd have an ideal system for a while.

Really depends on what your goals are, but for a budget of +/- $100 a new motherboard would be perfect. The FS/T forums here would be my first stop, then ebay and finally a merchant.

i have a similar problem. to begin, im a complete newb and my budget was too high for my own good 2 years ago. i bought a socket 939 x2 4800+, an eVGA 7800gtx ACS KO, and OCZ 2gb DDR.... every single component was immediately updated and all my stuff became obsolete, i feel depressed everytime i think about it and im never spending over 2k on a single system anymore. anyway... sob story aside, the board i had, a Lanparty nF4 expert board is dead. CAN anyone PLEASE recommend a good board for the 939 cpu, and just my single gfx card. i really dont play graphic intense games as i had planned. i only play counter-strike. so i dont need a superfancy board... i just want my system up and running again.

also, will DFI replace my board? its been almost 2 years. but ive never done any overclocking or alterations; i never had a chance to learn (this was my first system, besides a dell).

Thank you so much... this community seems so helpful i just never had a chance to get involved. i relaly hope someone can help me.

its a socket 939 with all the bells and whistles otherwise you can pick from the other 939 boards. its fairly slim pickings for socket 939 now. my brother got the epox open box recently, unforunately its sold out atm.

if you dont want to spend over 130 for a 939 board (and i cant blame you) then maybe you can get one of those nvidia with the ultra nforce 4 chipset. like i said there isnt much of a choice here.

This method is much less painful (and less time-consuming) than a repair install.

the problem is... the reason im switching mobos is because my lanparty nf4 is dead/cannot POST and ive taken it out to RMA, thats already undergoing its process.

I have all my components in another temporary mobo i bought that uses a K8M890 chipset and have everything already inside my case. so i assume there is no way to do the method u suggest deinonych correct? thanks a lot for the info though, i will do this method when i switch back to my lanparty mobo..

I ended up going with the foxconn 6150. I get BSODs and freezes all the time. I totally reinstalled windows.

One issue may be the 8500 nvidia graphics card i have in the pci express slot. the system seems more stable using the onboard video, but then I can't play any games
