Replacement LCD "changing colours" on startup!

I've just installed a replacement 17" LCD for my Sony Vaio laptop as the previous one got cracked (you could only see the working edges of the screen, but everything outputted perfectly to a external monitor) and have a strange problem!

I simply installed the existing ribbon cable into the rear of the new LCD and connected the LCD to the inverter which is all that is necessary, but when I turn on the laptop, the LCD display simply lights up with a full screen of colour which keeps changing every couple of seconds for ever and nothing else!
The colouring seems to be gradiented from slightly darker shades at the top to lighter at the bottom for each colour as it changes.

I've double checked the connectors.

Help!

Could be a bad cable to the screen, or the replacement part is a dud. Put the old one back in, does it do the same color strobe?

The color gradient is likely an artifact of the TN panel, and not relevant to the discussion.

It sounds like the display is stuck in some sort of test pattern. It sounds like you've got a bad connection or the wrong part.

If it WAS somehow stuck in a test/calibration sequence, how do I go about correcting this??? D:

Are there any small buttons/pins that could be changed on the back of the LCD in the "do not touch" area?

No..if I re-install the old, cracked LCD, I can still see a small bit of the POST text on the non-broken part of the LCD on a black background with white text which is correct.

It's possible that your laptop's BIOS is hard-coded to work with only "approved" panels.

I had a similar issue with an older Dell Inspiron. Bought a third-party panel to replace a defective one. It wouldn't work, even though it was the exact same panel type. I had to get a "Dell approved" panel (i.e. exact match including Dell P/N) for it to work. Not sure if Sony has the same policy, but it's worth considering.

Just an update.....I got a replacement LCD ribbon cable & inverter with no difference at all. :\

I then got yet another replacement LCD, but this time I made sure it was the EXACT same make/model as the original one and it works perfectly!

Clearly, something on my 1st replacement was not compatible with my Vaio, and I've now sent that back for a refund.
