REPLY ASAP, HELP!!!

Well I got eager to make sure m,y proccesser was ok and i took the
computer and put a heatsink that didnt latch down on top of it...and
turned it on to make sure the cpu was ok...well it froze up with the
Video Card bios loaded, I turned it off imidiately and it spelled strange
and the top of the cpu was VERY hot. I am not going to try to turn it on
again but it my CPU ok? I put the little heatsink on top to try and hope
it would help it cool but i guess it didnt work too well. The top of the
CPU is still nice and shiny and it doesnt look burnt or anything.
Also...there was a thermal pad and it melted right away to the side of
the cpu core...is this ok? It was on for 5 secs tops and it still looks shiny and it is not burnt on the bottom of the core either...

what type of cpu is this? and from what I understand, you had the heatsink on at all times right? so the lockup could've been due to something else...
or if it's a duron/tbird with the pads, theres a chance that the heatsink wasn't making contact with the core since you didnt fasten the heatsink?

should be ok....only way to tell is put a heatsink on properly and fire it up again

No the heatsink wasnt latched on top of it....so this was a first time thing.

OMG! ROTFLMAO! Sorry man, but that's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why don't you people be more careful with your hard earned money! Ok....my rant is over...I don't think you killed your CPU but it's hard to tell. I think you may have overheated it to the point that the BIOS shut the box down. Not sure though cause you don't say what MOBO you have. The CPU package has 4 pads on the corners. If you don't latch the HS down, you don't compress them and the HS doesn't make contact with the die. So basically you might as well have left the HS off. How far into the POST did you get anyway?

My advice would be to put the HS on correctly, i.e. remove that worthless thermal tape and use a good paste like Arctic silver. Then carefully put your HS back on and try to boot up. Might not be a bad idea to lap the HS as well to get that gunk off. See the other post in this topic about that. HTH!

you should never turn on your computer withount any heatsink on top of the processor. especially if it is AMD because it can burn ur processor very quickly.

If thats a socketA CPU ....You had it on for 5 seconds? You had better hope thats right cause they burn up in around 8 seconds. Another thing that thermal pad is toast they are meant to be used one time. Get some good quality thermal paste to replace it.
