I've been an advocate of merging the two efforts ever since I joined DSLR about 6 months ago and learned about the various teams, including TeAm. Not merging the two forums, just the SETI account/team at Berkeley by combining the members/WUs and picking a combined/joint name.
Would seem to achieve all sorts of good stuff for both teams:
* TeAm and DSLR would pass the top 10 teams a lot faster and have a realistic shot at making it to ARSian levels. They way things are right now it will take years for either team to get there individually.
* If I'm understanding correctly from the posts I've seen go by the TeAm SETI founder has left for some reason. We could contribute a founder - Kinguni. Its been great having the founder on the team for support. Maybe you guys could pick someone new to be a joint founder on a joint team.
* By keeping the two forums separate both teams could continue on posting in the formats and with the people we are all used two. Members of the two teams are starting to have a lot of joint accounts anyway now - like this one - thanks to the race. Good match from a tech viewpoint too: AnandTech is great for hardware and DSLR is great for networking. Good reason for folks to have accounts on both.
* Both forums are in English and both SETI teams are not corporate-sponsored in the sense of SGI/Sun/Microsoft/Intel (not making use of a lot of company-owned computers). The other top 10 teams would probably find it very hard to consider a similar merger due to the language differences and/or coporate sponsorship.
* We already know from this race that the output of the two teams is closely matched.
*Consider this yummy fact: if the two SETI accounts were merged right now today, the combined effort would be at 2997276 WUs, vaulting immediately past S@NL, Forum Hardware France, Team Art Bell, The Knights, MacAddict, and landing just a couple of WUs below SGI SETI! We would all be gunning for passing SGI and their Crays next. At current production rates the combined effort would likely wind up as #2 behind ARS by this December and may even be able to overtake ARS during the following year to be #1!
Disclaimer: these are my personal opinions only and not necessarily DSLR or the DSLR Starfire team! I'm just one of the crunchers, not the "management"
