Merge TA with another team?! ,never! ,I haven't watched & helped TA over the past 2yrs to rise the ranks from the 40's battling Team Russia to approaching the Top 10 to be diluted (no offense meant) by another team!.

TA has charged up the ranks through its own hard work ,and it will continue to do so ,we don't need a merger.
I expect many DSLR members would feel the same about there team.

Interesting hypothesis though

I'm with Assim1 here. I've been with TA since the early days and I want nothing to do with a merger. I mean no disrespect to DSLR but I feel to merge teams would taint both teams. Plus we have a great rivalry going. Let's not spoil a good thing...

Hello from Team Starfire!

Boy your board is picky about user names!!! I justed wanted to use "pike"!!

Anyway congrats on your progress in the race so far. Turning out to be pretty interesting!

It is fun to dream about merging our teams.. that would be quite an undertaking.

Crunch on!

Rather than merging the two teams, I would like to propose that all of DSLR justs runs with my user_info file. I don't mind, really.

OK... this newbie is gonna weigh in on this.

I'm with Assim1, Robor, and some of the other veterens.

This TeAm has scratched and clawed it's way to the top 11 teams in the world (soon to be #10 BTW).

To just merge with another TeAm would fly in the face of all the efforts of all the veteren members (and their crunching, assimilating, and recruiting efforts).

I say if DSLR members wish to join our ranks, then so be it. But if it came to a vote, I'd vote to not merge.

We all know that in the business world, when they talk about "mergers" it is really a bigger company buying out a smaller company. Are they volunteering to be bought out?

I agree 100%. Especially with the total mess that some of the supposed mergers have become...think of that ECCp-109 mess.

Yeah what mess.....who needs a merger, then the DOJ would come at us for a monopoly or something,...hah

Yeah, no merger. But if we did, we could call it "World Domination - Starring Team AnandTech, with a minor supporting role, almost of no consequence really, by DSLR!"
Is that too wordy?

I've been an advocate of merging the two efforts ever since I joined DSLR about 6 months ago and learned about the various teams, including TeAm. Not merging the two forums, just the SETI account/team at Berkeley by combining the members/WUs and picking a combined/joint name.

Would seem to achieve all sorts of good stuff for both teams:

* TeAm and DSLR would pass the top 10 teams a lot faster and have a realistic shot at making it to ARSian levels. They way things are right now it will take years for either team to get there individually.

* If I'm understanding correctly from the posts I've seen go by the TeAm SETI founder has left for some reason. We could contribute a founder - Kinguni. Its been great having the founder on the team for support. Maybe you guys could pick someone new to be a joint founder on a joint team.

* By keeping the two forums separate both teams could continue on posting in the formats and with the people we are all used two. Members of the two teams are starting to have a lot of joint accounts anyway now - like this one - thanks to the race. Good match from a tech viewpoint too: AnandTech is great for hardware and DSLR is great for networking. Good reason for folks to have accounts on both.

* Both forums are in English and both SETI teams are not corporate-sponsored in the sense of SGI/Sun/Microsoft/Intel (not making use of a lot of company-owned computers). The other top 10 teams would probably find it very hard to consider a similar merger due to the language differences and/or coporate sponsorship.

* We already know from this race that the output of the two teams is closely matched.

*Consider this yummy fact: if the two SETI accounts were merged right now today, the combined effort would be at 2997276 WUs, vaulting immediately past S@NL, Forum Hardware France, Team Art Bell, The Knights, MacAddict, and landing just a couple of WUs below SGI SETI! We would all be gunning for passing SGI and their Crays next. At current production rates the combined effort would likely wind up as #2 behind ARS by this December and may even be able to overtake ARS during the following year to be #1!

Disclaimer: these are my personal opinions only and not necessarily DSLR or the DSLR Starfire team! I'm just one of the crunchers, not the "management"

Remember that only 3x% of the people on each team are active. That means that only 3x% of the people would join the merged team, or less. We would NOT simply add our WU totals together, just parts of it. Our production would be the same as adding our production together though.

Well... we could just keep the team with the current higher number of total wu's, so that least will be lost
if we just add all the users from the team with less wu's to the team with more.... least amount of ground will be lost, and world domination will be the fastest.....
uhm... so which team would have the most work units? hmmm

Interesting points but

1.I'll live with it if it means TA stays intact

2.Yes the founder has left AT forums(his SETI account is still with us though).Though it would be nice for him to come back we get along fine without him ,so we don't need another founder.

3.Having 2 forums for 2 seperate teams works great for races too

4,5 *shrug*

6.Yeah but TA's identity would be history.TA would cease to exist.
Think of how many company mergers end up being 1 swallowing another

Anyway I think you get my viewpoint now ,I'll shut up & let others have their say

TA SETI would cease to exist. I know it's a common misconception around here, but TA is more than just SETI...

"Ooooh! Ooooh! Ooooh!"

There appears to be a question in the back of the room.

"Uh, yeah. I'm a noob and was just wondering what happened to Vapor?"

Edit: Nevermind. I was PM'ed with the info. Sad.

Heh... Funny you should say that. When the rc5 team was like 3x the size of the SETI team we all thought the same thing. :Q

<< What happened with the ECCp team? >>

I think they tried to merge with Sysopt or something and it was a huge mess because not everyone transfered over, etc.
