This finally made it to a federal court, where a Trump appointed judge crushed the republican bullshit challenge. The republicans were trying to change the rules after the game was over, and a winner declared, but only in four blue counties. The Hill - North Carolina Supreme Court rules most ballots must count in contested race
The GOP is still trying to steal a November election and it's anyone's guess what ultimately happens.
Vance refusing to certify a non-R win would ignite a civil war if not walked back. It would also make him a traitor and he would never ever live it down. Even he likely knows that.
Now, you'd still have to rely on potentially an unfriendly House/Senate.
Under the revised rules, the VP basically has no power:Vance refusing to certify a non-R win would ignite a civil war if not walked back. It would also make him a traitor and he would never ever live it down. Even he likely knows that.
Pence came out of the shadow of being a Trump VP smelling a bit rosy. He's put something of a shine on that since. Vance has a chance to do similarly. If he tries shenanigans in January 2029, he would smell a like turd permanently. I'm hoping for a non-R win.Under the revised rules, the VP basically has no power:
"The law clarifies that the vice president's role in the counting of the electoral votes is "solely ministerial," with no power to "determine, accept, reject, or otherwise adjudicate or resolve disputes over the proper list of electors, the validity of electors, or the votes of electors.""
And as you point out, nevermind the whole legitimacy fallout of the tried to undermine clear election results.
...
Anyway, we should always demand and expect our leaders to follow the rules, even if we privately suspect they won't. Why give them a public opinion opening to skirt the rules in the first place by setting low expectations?

If you want a society with a strong social safety net and other services, it means we need a high-trust society. Thus, we should always expect and demand people follow the rules, and publicly shun and denounce those that would disregard those rules. Resorting to nihilism in the present situation does not build the groundwork for potential good things of the future.Rules, HA!

LOL my sentiments exactly. "Wait, Vance can't do that, that's against the rules!" This administration doesn't give a fuck all about any a that.Rules, HA!

No, it's not going to stop them. But we should still do it anyway. Be the person in society that you want others to also be.While I agree with your sentiments/intentions, I think it's safe to say that those times are now safely behind us (maybe/hopefully temporarily). Demanding alone isn't going to stop them from doing whatever the fuck they want.

Ho ho ho. You're living in a cartoon fantasy.More like some minor civil unrest that is quelled instantly.
