Requesting 20" LCD recommendation

Here's what I'm trying to find:

Usage: mostly a development workstation, but I do game with it and will likely occasionally watch movies. Will most likely use DVI connection.

Resolution: 1600x1200 or 1680x1050

Response time: Doesn't have to be the best, but has to work well with games. It's not primarily a gaming machine, but I do game occasionally. From what I've read, I don't want a TN panel.

Color: 8-bit, 16.7M colors

Price: ~$300

Any recommendations?

I read through the LCD guide but those are all rather expensive, and also, I'm looking for a multipurpose one, I guess.

Yeah, I saw that one mentioned all over the lcd guide here, but although I can stretch my budget a little--doubling it is a little too much.

Silly me, I looked through the guide again and found:

20.1": HP LP2065, 1600x1200 (4:3)

20.1"w: ViewSonic VX2025WM, 1680x1050 (16:10)

21.0"w: Samsung SyncMaster 215TW, 1680x1050 (16:10)

20.1"w: LG Flatron L204WT, 1680x1050 (16:10)

20.1"w: Samsung SyncMaster 205BW, 1680x1050 (16:10)

Some of these say higher than my budget on the list, but I found them listed somewhere within budget. Out of the above--or similar price range--what would you recommend?

The VX2025WM would be my choice from the above. That's if you can find one for about ~$330ish, since lots of places are running out.

Highly Likely

Viewsonic VP2030b or VP2130b
Excellent P-MVA panel
8ms great for gaming

Some (solvable) problems with DVI-D

Quite warm on top of panel

Still the best all-use lcd display

Ordered myself the HP LP2065 couple of days ago. Havent got it yet, but i think it will be pretty good.

Heres czech review of the HP.

and same site, the Viewsonic VX2025wm.

I bought the HP because it has newest S-IPS and its price compared to the "next best thing" is just a lot less. Then again, comparing prices to US, the displays are practically free, in the USA that is...

And no, im not from "czech republic".

The VX2025WM sounds good for you. If you can't get that, grab the L204WT. The LP2065 may be fine for gaming but it's not among the fastest.

Samsung 204B (or 205Bw for wide). I have a 204b and like it, and will probably buy a second one for work.

I agree, get the Samsung 204B (my wife uses this one) or the 205BW (I have the 22in version of this) as they both rock for games.

Thanks for the suggestions. I see the samsung 204b is a TN panel with only 6 bit color. I think I'd rather have true 8 bit color.

All of them are in your price range. Don't be in illusion that you'll get 20" 8-bit panel for $300. You won't even get 19" 8-bit panel for that much. Lately, manufacturers simply state it is 16.7mil colors, even if it is TN panel.

All the ones I listed are 20" 8-bit panels and I found them online somewhere for <=$350. I said ~$300, I guess I should have said $300 +- $50.

Ah, I messed up, I think I included the 204WT because it said it was a really good TN. Not sure why the 2025wm made my cut--maybe I saw the 16.7m colors and didn't look closely to see it says dither.

According to the guide:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1745344&enterthread=y

The other three are 8-bit:
215TW
LP2065
VX2025WM

Hmmm... it's rather interesting that many of the suggestions have been 6-bit ones. I suppose those are more popular, especially for gaming? or because of price? I'm going to game, but that's secondary. I sit in front of it for 8-10 hours a day doing software development, internet, email, etc.

There are a couple places offering open box 215TW at $370, so yeah, it is a touch over $350, but if it's sufficiently superior, I might be able to stretch that high.
