Restart problem

I cant restart my pc properly. It shuts down perfectly, but doesnt restart from windows properly...always have to manually restart it......just hangs up.....the monitor remains on but the screen goes blank and everything goes silent......i have windows ME insalled
any help please

What video card are you using?

If it is not a video problem i.e. drivers, card failing, I'd take a look at power management, as in disabling it and see if that doesn't solve your problem. I have seen more shut down/restart problems caused by BIOS and Windows fighting over who's going to control power management.

Do you have an ATI video card? or do you have Blackice or ZoneAlarm installed? These are the first two things that come to mind for Me

sometimes my system hangs...when restarting and sometimes when shutting down.

I also have windows ME.

dont' know what is wrong...but for me it's random.

did you tweak anything in the bios?
try default settings in the bios and see if that works.

There are some known problems with the SB Live and restarting. If using SB Live try disabling SB Emulation in Device Manager. There are other workarounds as well, I just can't recall them at this time. I think even the latest SB Liveware may fix it as well.

There is also an issue with some Intel network cards. I have a similar problem that I live with in 98SE.

For the guy who has been getting shutdown problems..ie.BSOD's at shutdown, I was having same problem in WinME, then I heard someone on this forum say to do a FULL Scandisk and then do a Defrag. I did all that and now I don't have BSOD's anymore at shutdown.

well..i got a sound blaster plantinum sound card....with liveware 3.0 and all the new drivers that came with it...and an asus cusl2 motherboard.....could it be the motherboard...i have the latest drivers..
tried everything u people told me..thanx..but still the problem persists....u think i should kick ME and get 2000 instead?

I have a SBLive Value and a CUSL2. The problem I was having was that when my computer tried to restart I got a black screen and a cursor in the top left corner. It is a combination of CUSL2, SB Live, and Windows ME that is causing the problem. There are numerous suggestions for fixing it, I can't remember what it was in my case. I know when I was having the problem I had the Liveware and driver for Win98 instead of WinME because the WinME driver was not released until after I had setup my computer.

Other ways to address the problem from what I remember reading:
Reserve IRQ 5 in BIOS for legacy device and on Soundblaster 16 Emulation there is a checkbox about sharing LPT, this should be checked.

Disable Soundblaster 16 Emulation
