Restore Registry Dos Mode

I back up my registry often with the "regedit" command ran in the "run" program off the Start menu in Windows 98SE. I export the registry, and, give it a file name, it has the ".reg" extension. I have no problem restoring the registry ( import ) in Windows "Safe Mode", but, I can't figure out how to "import" or restore a particular registry I've saved, in Dos mode. I've recently had a situation where I couldn't get booted into Safe Mode, only DOs mode, and, couldn't figure out how to import a saved registry. My question: Can I, and, if so, how do I "import" or "restore" a registry I manually backed up, exported, in "regedit", when I can't boot up Windows in regular or safe mode?

At a DOS prompt, type in 'scanreg /restore' and press Enter.

Then choose what you want to restore from on the menu.

How do I choose the specific registry(s) I manually saved? ( Exported and named in "regedit"? Those selections only allow me to restore recent autosaved registries.
What folder does Windows save it's backups of the registries? Maybe I could save mine in that same folder, and, then have the option to pick one of mine?

First you need to change the attributes of the SYSTEM.DAT & USER.DAT files (they are set to Read Only).
[attrib -h -r]Then delete the files.

to restore the SYSTEM.DAT file manually.
REGEDIT /L:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT /C X:\SYSTEM.???

to retore the USER.DAT file manually.
REGEDIT /R:C:\WINDOWS\USER.DAT /C C:\X\USER.???

[C:\X\SYSTEM.??? & USER.DAT - where X is the Folder Name (if used) and ??? is the file extension used]

To see the correct syntax for using DOS realmode Regedit type 'REGEDIT'

Remember to set the file attributes back to hidden and read only [attrib +r +h]

It might be easier for someone not used to DOS to just restore yesterday's auto-stored backup and then boot into Safe Mode and double click on your file to install it.

This is what I have been doing, when I can find an uncorrupted registry in " scanreg /restore" ran in DOS. I've, on occasion, ran into situations where a decent registry was not available, either way too old, or, all available were corrupted, therefore, not being able to boot into Safe Mode, to, maybe pick one I did manually save with "Regedit".
I used to be fairly familiar with DOS back in 1991, but, I've slept since then.
