On the WinXP operating system, is it possible to restrict one person from access to the Internet without denying other users?

In other words, the parents don't want to restrict the movements of their children, they want to completely deny them access while still being able to access it themselves.

Is it Pro or Home?

Windows XP Pro comes with a utility called Group Policy Editor. It is accessed using the file gpedit.msc from run. You can set a policy to disallow iexplore.exe from running. Windows XP service pack 2(soon to released and freely available) will also include new policy that will allow one to block outbound traffic using Internet Connection Sharing as the "firewall". So one could make policy to disallow any program and block outbound network traffic with a statefull firewall.

This is not recommending Internet Connection Sharing as a replacement for a more secure product, but a means to achieve your goal.

I am basically familiar with Group Policy Editor.

Can you give an example of how you would write this restriction and exactly which section it would go in. Remember, we are not trying to restrict the entire computer, just the one user (child).

Jack,
WinGuardPro seems to be a very useful utility, and I have downloaded it and will play for a while to see if it can satisfy the needs of my friend. However, Peter's suggestion to use the Group Policy Editor might do the same thing with less overhead, but I am waiting for him to post back with some more detailed suggestions on exactly how to structure the restriction.

May be the mode should change some people senior requirments from 200 to flexible, and substract these posting from the total!.

It is a question of policy. On my computers I do what ever I dim is the most efficient and cost effective.

However if it is friends and family, I do not like to change OS settings that might be temporary or frequently changed since I do not know who else ?fiddles? with them.

We were all children and all got grounded from one thing or another. Now-a-daze, it's the Internet - a reasonable presumption at worst. Ditch your Grinch - why turn light-hearted humour into a flame war?

That being stated, another approach to limit access to specific users, sites, etc. with advanced logging as well, would be to set-up a dedicated proxy aside from the workstation that requires username/password authentication. Limit internet access to ONLY the proxy in your router and only to/from specific ports. Consider squid.

Better?
