Awesome, if i can get 4.5GHz from an Ivy, i'll be super happy.
I just found this:Lapping voids warranty. Removing heat spreader sounds interesting.
I would suggest people not to do it. I did it on my old Opteron 165 and I damaged some small parts of the CPU and it did not overclock as well afterward. So who wants to be the first to pop off their IHS ??

It didn't do anything to lower my temps, either.
It's too risky and it voids the warranty. With Ivy Bridge it might lower temps a few degrees, though.
Yeah I grazed off the top of some of those little things that pop out the top of the CPU package.I did this with an Opteron 170 and it lowered my load temps in the ballpark of 12C. After de-lidding I was able to prime at 3.15 Ghz so it made a significant difference.
I think it's risky to do delidding right now though so I do kinda agree with you... I think we need to wait for more people to try first and if the procedure is really worth it, a bunch of IB IHS-popping guides will show up on the internet. SickBeast, I am guessing these are what you damaged? I do not believe these are on IB so it should be less of a problem.
I can only speak from experience on AMD's... It's not that hard but you have to be careful not to push the razor too deep or you can damage the little IC's that stick out of the PCB near the core.
I wonder why Intel would do that.
That doesn't make sense. Intel had to cut prices because Ivy underperformed. The working theory is to save money but to also preserve the higher end brands like X79 and IB-E. Would you buy IB-E if regular IB could clock to 5.2Ghz on air?

It looks like a design mistake/defect to me. I don't see how that would even save them money.
There is no IB-E. And to say Ivy is underperforming is the biggest joke ever.
IB-E will be coming end of the year
Still not on Intels roadmaps that gets distributed to partners. Unless its gonna come in H2 2013.
Rumor has it end of 12 and start of 13 but who knows with Intel
You'd have to be crazy to do it and/or completely not care about throwing your money down the drain.
