If it's like the MBA. You just have to unscrew it (apparently its pentalobe screws) and then you should be able to just pop it out.

According to iFixit, it is exactly like the MBA in that regard.

That's what I'm hoping. But iaccording to Anand the controller and SSD in the rMBP is already the fastest its going to be and probably if you end up upgrading third party you might have a performance hit.

I'm planning on offloading some stuff off my internal HDD and putting it on an external and hoping that 256 is enough. in all honesty, I probably will be able to get away with it and ended up saving at least $300 since I didn't upgrade to the higher end rMBP.

plug an SDXC card in, maybe 64GB, and you can store a lot of files without taking up a USB port.

I plan on just using a system pull for my 2010 MBA, cheaper than getting the OWC one.

I think buying a laptop every year or two is a complete waste of money.....

Look I just got the MBP 13.3 beginning of this year. Not spending a dime on another MBP......

My last computer purchase was 4 years ago. MBP 15" (Late 2008), I think that was the first unibody MBP.

Thanks for the advice regarding which model to buy. I think It will have too be the base model with 16GB RAM. I'm also undecided on whether to buy a tablet and get a powwwaaa house of a desktop PC. Still got to think about this.

So now that it's been out for a few weeks, how has the MacBook been working for you guys? I'm thinking of ordering the base one with 16GB of ram soon.

It depends on how well you can sell your current 1-2 year old laptop. If you hit the curve just right, you can have the latest model while spending about the same amount as replacing a laptop that is 4-5 years old. And remember, a broken laptop is worth about $0.

I'm curious - why MBP 13"? To me it has always stood out as the odd duck in the Apple lineup, with little reason to exist. It was never substantially better than the much cheaper Macbook as long as the MB existed, and Airs have superior displays as well as stock SSD resulting in more real world performance. It's a real WTF that even the freshest 2012 13" MBP has 1280x800 vs the 1440x900 in my 2010 Air.

Regarding memory, I wouldn't take more than 8GB in a laptop unless I had an expectation of actually going to need it. After all, any memory you have has to be written onto the SSD every time you close the machine and it hibernates. Takes energy, SSD write cycles and SSD space.

And regarding laptop purchase/selling strategies: I have always bought either new, or less than one year used so there's warranty left. Previously I haven't had any special sell timings, but this time I have Applecare, so I'll be trying to sell the machine some time before AC runs out.

The 13" MBP offers a more powerful CPU, Superdrive and the ability for far more HDD capacity reasonably.

For most it doesn't matter, in my company many of us are running several VM's and large apps on our MBP's.
