I feel inclined to make a new thread because now it's no longer a rumor.

And the specs are drool-worthy
Display: 15.4" 2880 x 1800 (wow!)
CPU: Intel Core i7 quad-core (2.7GHz w/ Turbo to 3.7GHz)
RAM: up to 16GB DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: nVidia GeForce GT 650M
Storage: 768GB flash (likely 512GB SSD + 256GB SSD configuration, but wow!)
Ports: HDMI + USB 3.0 + Thunderbolt x2 (wow!)

0.71" thick and about 4.5lbs (hm... doesn't look like it underwent that much of a diet).

I planned to skip, but... why, oh why do they have to make it look so... awesome!?

Edit: $2200 and up!

The pixel density they chose is perfect for an OS like Lion. 220 is exactly twice the previous 110 ppi. I'm glad they didn't go to something annoyingly high like 270 (which is twice the 135 ppi in the 11" Air).

They're gonna milk the early adopters, like they usually do. I'm hoping for a 13" 2560x1600 (226 ppi) next gen MBP myself... although I probably wouldn't buy it if it's got even a moderate premium, as my 13" Core 2 Duo has been fine for my usage once I put an SSD in it.

I'd like to get a lighter 13", but I have no interest in the 13" Air's screen, particularly because the ppi is too high for Lion IMO.

Price screwed it up for me. I guess I'll hold on to my MacBook a little while longer.

Anyone in England interested in buying an early 2008 15inch MBP with SSD and HDD? Definitely going to be buying this!

finally

i've been using my late 2008 aluminum macbook unibody (same as 13" pro) for 3.5 years and have been waiting for this upgrade.

i'm not sure about the screen res, its higher than my 30" Dell LCD...

surprised on the price, cheaper than I thought it was going to be. base spec is also great in that its 8gb and 256gb.

Just over four years old, I guess it's time for her retirement. Thanks for the pointer Amdhunter

Impressive display but the price really hurts the appeal. I think a 1080p IPS 13.3" Air for the same price as the old one would have been better for most people and put them on a level playing field with Asus.

I do wonder how the GPU will cope pushing that many pixels though, after all, it only has 1GB of VRAM. Would be interesting to see if it is higher clocked than the standard MBP's 650M.

I think it is clocked the same.

And it's not a lot of pixels for normal desktop. At least I don't think it is more than what the GPU can handle.

The resolution seems a bit... high for games, but if games don't do AA, then I think it's a viable resolution to game at, and the GT 650M is just the right amount of muscle.

But man, am I going to enjoy Photoshop and AutoCAD on this thing...

$2199 MacBook Pro with 2880x1880p resolution sounds about right IMO... there are PC Monitors with 2560x1600 resolution that costs that much!...

Out of interest, can you dual boot/ virtual machine off a thunderbolt external HDD? I'd probably only have enough money to get 256GB and I don't fancy partitioning the SSD.

I don't see a GT 650M being canywhere close to powerful enough to drive games at that resolution. Even at 2560x1600 it takes a single high end desktop card to deliver good fps in modern games.

I thought the same. I'd be happy gaming at 1400x900 odd, like on my current pro.

Yes you can boot off Thunderbolt, but it's probably a lot cheaper to boot off USB 3.

That's because most modern games do some form of AA by default. If AA was off, I don't doubt 2880 x 1800 is doable.

For one, I know Skyrim would be playable at that resolution because I tested 2560 x 1600 at Medium settings on a MBP 15" late 2011.

It sounds like Apple will wait until summer 2013 before they add touchscreens to their notebooks.

If they add touchscreens. Not that it means anything, but they have publicly scorned touchscreens on computers since it is annoying to hold your arm up the whole time. They already bundle in the best trackpad in the business, why lift your whole arm to do something on the screen?

I suppose that depends on your definition of playable. To me that means >45fps and there is no way a GT650M will do that on most games without using lower settings. Turning AA off isn't going to be enough.
