I do hope the base model is slightly cheaper than £2199 when it comes to the UK. Apple have never been great with matching the exchange rate.
'

VAT tax mate. they would have to cut their normal price by 20% to make it even.

I'm glad Apple is pushing this. LCD technology has allowed for higher res for a while but no manufacturer has done anything because they don't care about advancement and are satisfied with their un-innovative designs that bring only minor improvements to the table.

Windows laptops have definitely been stale for too long, I think Ultrabooks and now this (and tablets gobbling up sales) will push OEMs to start actually trying.

Asus Zenbook with the 1080p screen is definitely a start!

The retina mbp is in a league of its own. It is expensive but there isn't another laptop like this. The MBA is $100 less, so that's an option. Apple really hit it out of the park with this one.

MBA starts @ 999 or 1099 or whatever

"New" MBP w/ Retina starts @ 2200.

compared to the regular 15" MBP, looks like you're paying $400 for:
awesomesauce screen
256GB SSD (instead of 500GB of 1960s tech)
4GB of ram
thinner, lighter

that's actually a bargain. (heheh, the regular 15" MBP 256GB SSD costs $500, so it's actually more expensive than the retina MBP)

Asus has some killer hardware that won't make the wallet screen.
Especially since Apple didn't update the displays on the MBA. The $1099 13" Zenbook Prime with 1920x1080 looks very appealing. It might not be the "highest resolution" laptop display in the world, but I bet it would satisfy a lot of people wanting a sharper panel for half the price of the Retina MBP.

Actually 1680x1050 is probably the best for 15" It's reasonably high, and I'd prefer that they work on integrating an IPS screen. I'd love to compare the 1680x1050 MBP against the new retina. I think 1400x900 is a bit too low, but 1680x1050 is perfect.
1680x1050 on a 15.4" screen is the same ppi as the 13" Air, which for me is too high. However, my eyes aren't as good now as they were 15 years ago. Maybe 15 years ago I might have tolerated it.

None of this would be an issue though if OS X were resolution independent. Unfortunately, it's not.

... and no Ethernet port. Again.

Geez... doesn't anyone living in the magical world of Apple users ever need to transfer large files over a network?

They released the GigE dongle today of course.

However, I would have assumed a GigE-less Pro machine would have gotten 802.11ac. Nope.

Bah... dongles are a pain in the ass. I already see all of my Apple laptop carrying co-workers having to carry DisplayPort to VGA dongles with them all the time to use the projectors where I work, and they cause nothing but trouble.

Now they'll need to carry two of them in places in the building where the WiFi is spotty.

I'm OK with the loss of the built-in GigE port, since the dongle is now available, esp. since it means the MBP is that much thinner (beveled edge) and there are now two Thunderbolt ports. If you look at the pictures, you'll see that the new design wouldn't even be able to accomodate the height of a normal Ethernet port. Same goes for Firewire 800, as it wouldn't fit either, so they released a dongle for that too.

However, the loss of the built-in Gigabit Ethernet port should have been accompanied by the gain of 802.11ac.

BTW, the existing USB to Ethernet dongle is kinda stupid because it only supports 100 Mbps Ethernet.

i wish they would quit it with the "retina" display. first 328ppi, then 280ppi, now, 220ppi. whats next? 100dpi is also retina if held far enough?

Indeed yes. However, for the previous generation MacBook Pro 15.4", retina with its 110 ppi is about 32 inches. So, it's not retina for most people because people usually don't sit that far back from their laptops.

The Next Generation MacBook Pro 15.4" with its 220 ppi is retina at 16" distance. That's more than reasonable for a laptop. People don't generally use their laptops at a 12" distance like they would an iPhone 4.

If an apple TV comes out next year at 4k res they will be at about 80-120ppi and I bet they will be calling it "retina".

3840x2160 on 50" TV (88 ppi) would be retina at 3.25" feet.

However, a 4K Apple TV would be pointless IMO.

Although it's a lot of money for home/personal use, I cannot spec any other laptop that comes close to Macbook Pro, either in specs or price. A quick customization for the ugly, thick 15" Dell is coming at more than $1000 more, after I selected a slightly less powerful processor, 512GB drive, best monitor. For Professional use, it seems to be a best buy for now.

QFT! This new MBP is sweet there's no denying but, it is expensive, a base 15 upgraded to 16GB of ram is 2,200 hundred plus tax. Asus has some killer hardware that won't make the wallet screen.

For the first time, I actually want a MacBook Pro but the price completely turned me off. I cant justify a $2200 purchase on a laptop that will be pretty much obsolete in 2-3 years due to the fact that it is non upgrade-able.

No 802.11ac either.

You mean it doesn't have 802.11ac? Are you sure? Have you looked everywhere?
From Apple's own spec page:

Wireless
802.11n Wi-Fi wireless networking;3 IEEE 802.11a/b/g compatible
Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology

3. Wireless Internet access requires a base station or other wireless access point and Internet access; fees may apply. Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort.

Yea, sorry, forgot to put this here /sarcasm

You had mentioned it three times up to that point. We get it.
