Love it or hate it, Subaru finally got us some decent pictures of the redesign.

I like the front end but don't like the Honda/Acura looking bum. They managed to get that 2.4L making close to 230hp without the turbo though--so good on them I guess. That little bump will go a long way in a car that's this light. I think they reworked the chassis design a little bit, too. Something about front end rigidity or something yada yada cars 6-speed.

And yes, 6MT still an option

Feel free to post to other pics and/or articles or tech pages.

I like it but agree on the rear - it reminds me of a honda civic for whatever reason.

Engine bay is tight though. Unfortunate - will make it very hard to tune up and less likely to get a boosted engine.

I've always thought torque was the biggest problem with the original motor. This new one now makes 184 lb-ft of torque which is better but I wonder what the curve looks like. Personally, I think they would have been better off with a smaller displacement turbocharged engine.

That's what I heard -- a tad underpowered. But I've been looking at the Forester for a couple years as a possible new-car option for me. [I'm about to post yet another [ANOTHER!] ] thread on my 26-year-old Trooper. A replacement or addition is all part of a household financial plan.]

I'd also heard that Suburu had introduced a hybrid. I may have looked at it online, but my recollections are a bit vague. Typically, the Suburu internal-combustion models may get near 30 mpg. But even if I could be dead in ten years, I'm looking to the future (as long as the DMV lets me drive at age 83 -- ten years from now.)

I drove "sporty" FWD Civics for maybe 18 years. I might have been attracted to a Beamer or some other peppy sedan, but the Trooper has spoiled me. I'm not sure even the Forester would match my Trooper experience . . . but . . one has to balance availability and other factors, so . . .

Saw some comments earlier from people saying the rear end looks like a Buick Regal; they aren't wrong lol

The bay looks mainly unchanged from the previous generation; there will likely be plenty of FI kits available (just like there are now). Personally, I wouldn't feed any modern boxer engine boost without building up the bottom end first--but people obviously do it.

The torque curve in the original model(s) is easily correctable; I evened mine out using just a different upstream exhaust config and a simple ECU flash; car still has all catalysts. It's a much smoother pull through basically the entire powerband now. I'm also thinking my peak crank hp to be around 220 or so, on 93 oct pump gas with the tune & simple reversible modifications.

I probably wouldn't buy a newer one at this point anyway but I'm glad to see the model survive for another round of drivers. Not sure what the front end on the 86 is going to look like though.

Yeah I can't imagine you can run more than 5-7 psi in these engines without grenading them, the compression is what - 12:1?

Sounds about right, like you said it's already a higher compression unit so once you start stressing those internals you basically cut the reliability in half (at least). To do it right, you want to do the head gaskets and studs (like any other engine) but it's also advisable to invest in a oil cooler or cooler/rad combo and then vent the extra hot side heat at the turbo as well. The stock connecting rods and crank will probably be fine up to a point, but that doesn't mean I'd be terribly confident either.

I've seen so many dudes blow up the stock setup because they just bolted something right up and started ripping. No bueno. The difference here is that this new 2.4L is actually similar (if not the same) as the TC model in the Ascent (and most likely new WRX)--so there's a bit more incentive to move to a boosted application.

Having said that, adding a little bit of boost to these motors can really wake things up--but then it's a matter of it being worth it or not. It's not like turbocharging a JZ or RB series motor... or even an EJ for that matter.

Yeah - its just unfortunately the only way to get these to around ~300BHP. I have to imagine they are relatively efficient already with the intake and exhaust, so bolt ons have limited effect. I love these little coupes and that 200-250 HP range is about right for most people but I want 300+

A ~230whp BRZ would be quite thrilling to drive, but there's always the new 'Supra' which, if we do end up getting a manual version, wouldn't be quite as nimble. Don't love that it's a BMW but the Japanese don't really make inline 6 engines anymore. We also have the new Z being lined up in the near future--which could FORCE Toyota to press BMW for manual trans. I still think they kept all of the manuals for themselves, for the Z4...

Not sure how long I'll have my 2013 FR-S but at only 23k miles and it taking winters off I should be able to keep it around. I would consider boost (via Turbo or Rotrex) if I had a spare 5 grand wasting away but it's good enough; I'd prefer to keep my license in-hand.

Eager to see how this car stacks up on the track vs the original Toyobaru twins.
