One question i have concerning buying music online in the form of a download is the quality......i dont want cheapass compressed music, im certainly not going to pay the equivelant cost per track as i would from a CD for it! And please, dont give me that 'you cant tell the difference, its the placebo effect' crap..i have a nice hifi and you can more than tell the difference on it. I would pay = CD price for CD quality download, as in the exact same info thats on the CD thats released in the shop, however i think they should also for a premium offer a higher DVD-A/SACD quality version as well, im sure there would be ppl like me who would be happy to pay extra for truly good quality sound recording.

I use p2p to see if i like a tune, mebbe i heard part of it on the radio and got the song name, so i download it, if i like it then i go buy it, if i dont i delete it. This is beneficial for the industry as a wider audience can find music, but people spoil it by downloading and keeping. Also p2p means i can get hold of remixes that quite often are not available once the CD single has been discontinued....examples being The KLF, The Orb etc, they have many songs that you just cannot buy anymore for love nor money......

Just because a car dealer sells a specific model doesn't mean it's the one you want. I want my mp3s ripped at a MINIMUM of 384, not the bullsh|t 92 and 128 that's being sold now. It's all about what I want my music to sound like. I want GOOD sound quality, not the sh|t that's being sold.

Because they know there will always be people who will find a way to pirate. They want to go after the more accessible methods, the ones the bulk of the people use to pirate. They do have people on the inside in the "release groups" and whatnot, and they have shut some down.

mind you, you have to be careful with CDs as well, some of those discs that are CDs, but cant be branded CDs because of the antipirate watermarking ( i think Kylies got one out)going against the CD consortiums rules of quality.....these watermarked discs are actually just 128kpbs quality music!!!!...yet you pay CD price for them!!!

I agree that music is expensive, but this is not a necessity like food or drink. The RIAA can charge whatever they want. You don't have piraters decide what price to set your product at. The RIAA/MPAA both are legally defending their business. I agree that their current approach _is not working well_, but taking the moral high ground for one's theft of another's intellectual property is ridiculous. If you are hit by the RIAA/MPAA you deserve it.

Yeah but if you really think about it, if you pay $1 per song or so, you'd still end up paying for the price of the entire album if you wanted all the songs.

I think that is the biggest issue, the fact that the songs individually or collectively aren't worth that much.

IMHO I think this all started when Napster was globally advertised. Before that... Only IRC savvy people were able to pirate anything.

Im not saying kazaa, limewire, or other p2p sharing programs wouldnt have started, but I am sure it speeded things up a bit more.

I think they would accomplish better results if they focused more on getting the actual P2P programs shut down instead of wasting resources suing individual people. This all just seems to send the P2P networks more underground where they grow stronger.

wow, my school used to let us on i2 and we could share stuff with those schools over dc++, but they kicked the connection because there was too much traffic. there were some other schools on the i2 connection too, but i recognize these.

Before they came out i remember having to use FTP servers and going through the upload/download ratios. Back than the avarage users were never to figure out about that side of the internet. cause they were not smart enough.

But when Napster made its new easy to use priating software and everyone got it ..it became the the attention of the RIAA....

Edit: Downloading a movie or music off the internet is really no different than borrowing a movie/cd/tape off of someone you know and copying it. The problem is the internet was not designed to be controlled by anyone. So stopping anyone from downloading anything is practically impossible.
