RIM shares jump on talk of possible sale to Samsung

Samsung flat-out denied it though, so this may be nothing more than wild speculation.

Also, Samsung's not going to buy RIM
I wouldn't be surprised if rumors like these are really just deception from powerful people who invested heavily in RIM to minimize their loses before they get out.

RIM's best chance to survive right now is just to make a customized version of Android. I don't think BB10 has chance as an independent OS although supposedly it has Android app compatibility.

The whole thing certainly stinks of manipulation.

Rim's best chance has to include continuing to be a virtually un-hackable haven for secure corporate communication.

Beyond that, how could any of us possibly know what chance an unseen OS has? The world isn't going to run on iOS or Android (or even Windows, x86, and fossil fuels) forever.

Nothing like a good old fashioned pump and dump.

The short rebate is 40% at some brokers as well, it has become near impossible to be short this stock. Any kind of a rumor is a killer to your P and L, when you are paying so much to short something. Also these rumors often result in some forced covers if enough shares change hands that the stock becomes harder to borrow.

Managers don't care about a 100% secure device, they want an iPhone.

The smartphone is basically the platform of the future and right now, the mobile OS war is settling down. It's a game of musical chairs and the music is about to stop. By the time BB10 comes out, the market could have left them completely behind. That's why I think they have a chance to sort of RIMify Android devices. You don't need to get people to abandon their platform, you just need a line of devices to stick out among the countless Android devices.

This is true.

We haven't had a really good corporate espionage case lately, but the next one is likely to involve an iPhone

I don't think the mobile OS war is ready to settle down. For one thing, PC is still the office tool of the present, and MS has the inside track to really, truly integrate mobile devices with existing corporate networks. When someone has a mobile OS that natively plays friendly with the total package the way BB does with email and calendars, they will most likely win.

So far, BB has created (still) the best secure mobile communications device available, apple has shown us what a user-friendly and highly appealing UI can do, and Android has offered a truly flexible, powerful, but unfocused and somewhat inefficient option.

As it sits now, the insane number (and generally low quality) of applications needed to make a smartphone useful (beyond phone/email/camera + usable web browser) suggest to me that the industry is in its infancy.

I can't see this being close to settled until MS brings Win8 to the table, and we see what it can really do. In the meantime, everyone, including RIM still has the opportunity to create the best OS. In a year or two, that opportunity may be gone, but right now it is there.

Flashed a few BB and the version 6 OS is terrible. Further more it looks like rim is trying to make money out of a loader because with every new OS they added some blocking techniques for older loaders which mean phones that are caught in a error boot state are becoming part of the brick philosophy.

Too bad they're holding it in Orlando. If it was in Vegas, even Miami, it would be a good junket since nobody would want to attend the sessions anyway. Unfortunately Orlando is a shit hole and not even worthy of a junket.

Vegas is more of a shit hole than Orlando, which is a fairly nice city. If you don't like to smoke, drink, or gamble, then Vegas has nothing to offer.

Sorry, you're right. I actually prefer odorific swamps, alligators, rednecks, and bad food. I just threw Vegas out there so other people could relate.

So don't visit the Everglades when you're in Orlando, there's more to do there. Rednecks are in the panhandle though, not in Orlando.

Wooo... It's "Breaking" on Bloomberg. No article yet. So, who's placing bets?

Up because they now have some hope and a change in direction?

Down because they lost their leadership at a critical time?

Edit:

"Hand picked successor" - not liking the sounds of that.

I'm thinking this is smoke and mirrors, this guy is a figurehead and those 2 knotheads are really running the company.

I think they'd rather run it into the dirt than admit they're wrong.

So Playbook update may actually come out within the month (lulz?)...

And iPad 2s are now going on sale (wonder why...). So, I guess one year old hardware for half the price relative to the iPad 3 is worth it. Maybe?
