Color me surprised.

Maybe they can surprise me some more by beating analysts' revenue expectation when they report their results this afternoon. I'm not holding my breath for that one, though.

Is everyone enjoying what RIMM is doing with Droid app intergration?

It's kinda awesome. They really are working towards making most (if not all) apps that are written for Droid to be easily portable to BB10. Apps that are portable take about 10 minutes to port. This is not a code rewrite. BB10 will run the actual Droid executable natively. The only other requirment is that devs remove references to Android.

So, what will be the best enterprise device and it's security along with a potential selection of 90%+ of the apps on the Android market. All while articles on Android malware are popping up everywhere.

AWESOME!

This reminds me of outsourcing. Such a great money saving idea. Till you realize India is 12 time zones away and the devs there are not as good as you think and there is a language barrier. Companies that outsourced now insourcing. Reminds me how? BYOD (Bring your own device) is hot right now. Can't wait for CIOs have this blow up in their faces.

Will you please stop referring to Android as "Droid" if you want to be taken seriously when discussing smartphones? That's a Lucasfilm trademark and a line of licensed Verizon phones (NOT a smartphone platform).

Analyst expectations are something like $-0.41 per share.

Ya, that will make me be taken seriously as one of the few people that are optimistic over RIMMs prospects.

Stock is up 22% after-hours or 30% in the past 4 days-ish... Nice.

The corporate music video is working! It's WORKING!

Watched half of hte video. It's target audience was developers. I thought it was funny in context. Anyone that is not a developer for BB10 probably does't get it. It was fun seeing RIMM poke fun at themselves. Refreshing almost. It was very human of them. No one will see iOS maps 2.0 come out along with a humorous appology by Apple.

Gambled on few hundred shares ahead of earnings. Sold out AH at $8.45. Win!

Will be buying some more AMD with the profits

Love these super high short-interest stocks <3

Well, I guess RIM has impressed me (or rather, they've disappointed me less). Given their pitiful performance last quarter, I was predicting that they'd fall short of expectations again. Looks like they managed to slightly slow their bleeding.

Of course, RIM will have to do much more than to remain a going concern, but at least it's looking more likely that RIM will live long enough to actually release BB10.

I was gambling on it tanking after worse than expected results. Oh well, wouldn't have put much money in anyways.

Edit: By the way, how the hell did they increase their cash reserves by $100 million after losing over $100 million this quarter?

Cash flow and profits are not the same thing, esp. In the short term.

Thank God. Today I got approval on a corporate iPhone. Assuming they let me keep my Blackberry I am thinking of ways in which I can inventively destroy it. At this time I think death by fire is at the top of the list, though I think there must be other good ways also.

GFY Blackberry. The only reason you are not completely dead already is because of slow-moving companies that are now telling you to GTFO. Good riddance, take your laurels and eat them.

The fact the company has 2M new subscribers really makes me doubt the future of humanity. These people are obviously still buying simply on name and have never experienced anything else. Enjoy the three sh*ty apps you can get for your phone.

Doppel,

I see your angry, you don't have to be uneducated also.

I've seen people do the blackberry=>Apple=>Blackberry thing too. Once they realize how much longer it takes to do work on an iPhone than their old blackberry, some people come back. Some people thing Angry Birds is important though.

Curious, what OS did you BB run?

If you don't understand the 2 million increase in subscribers, that just means you don't understand the world markets. Educate yourself on the matter.

FWIW: I have a Droid, I think it is a piece of shit (Motorolla Droid 3). The OS crashes once a month. Apps shut down when I get a phone call. It sucks. I will never buy an Apple. So, I am actually looking forward to the BB10 which is pretty much based on the premise of not crashing (OS is used in military devices for god's sake) and apps do not just shutdown for the hell of it.

I don't really care though. The US customer will not decide RIMs fate. People just don't seem to grasp this.

Their world wide smartphone market share is even lower than their US market share.

And if RIM is feeling pressure from the likes of Apple and Samsung, just wait until Huawei establishes a world-wide presence.

I'll agree with IHMJ2004 on one thing: the developing world will have a different handset market than what we're used to. I just don't think RIM will be a significant part of that market in the long term.

Doppel,

I am angry, yes. Suffering this thing knowing other people have phones from the 21st century is a constant frustration. My phone takes over four minutes to boot up. Its screen is as small as a postage stamp. Even on wi-fi its browser is crap, on 3G damn near worthless. It is slow taking pictures, and lately it's taken to randomly rebooting. It is a 9650, a 2.5 year old phone, but the iPhone didn't suck this much 2.5 years ago. This is OS 6.0. Maybe I could upgrade that but no upgrade will make a piece of crap hardware not be piece of crap.

The phone has a fantastic keyboard. I will miss that. But otherwise, no I won't go back to Blackberry unless I work for a company that forces one on me before RIM goes belly up and stops making phones. There is one person at work I know who's gone to a new blackberry when he could have gone to iPhone. However, this person has demonstrated an incredible ineptitude in other areas of his work and life also. The rest of us are going to iPhones and I've heard no regrets. The local site's wireless administrator yesterday when I expressed my raging hatred of the phone said he "hated" his blackberry also (now iPhone, too).

The 2 million increase is coming from chumps, frankly. It's sure not in the US as the company is dead here because we have real alternatives.

I have not used a droid phone but everything tells me they are the sloppy seconds version of the iPhone, for people too cheap and/or hate apple to get an iPhone. This is surprising since for example a Galaxy S iii costs the same at verizon as an iPhone.

We all know there is iPhone and there is everybody else. That's just the reality of the market.

Doppel,

You are funny!

You're right though, 2.5 years is just long enough to get you to a 3GS, the first iPhone that isn't absolutely awful. But still very slow and behind the curve at this point. Just like your BB.

Also you have an OS5 device upgraded to OS6, which would be a significant improvement, except that I'm fairly sure it's a known-unstable upgrade for that device.

3chord,
Shhhhh

Doppel,
Have you read about BB10 at all? What parts make you think it will be a failure?
No, not much. I certainly hope that software released so late won't be a failure (generally a litany of slipped dates in a software project tell a sad story), but the problem is not BB10 it's RIM itself. Nobody wants a blackberry anymore, it's a dinosaur. It's still losing market share at a breathtaking rate.

The fact that BB10 continues to be touted as some second coming of the Christ speaks volumes about how cluster fvcked RIM is. When was the last time a product was going to save Amazon? Save Microsoft? Save Apple? Unless this is RIM's ipod they are done and I don't think they have a Steve Jobs on staff.

Sounds you haven't read much about it and don't know what you are talking about. RIM has boatloads of cash and all the right pieces to turn it around. All the developer buzz about BB10 has been very positive.

I really hope they make it, loved my Blackberry bold to death. Been through a captivate and an iphone, and while I consider them great, I think the BB was the best phone experience I had. Then again, I'm still using my phone primarily as a communication and navigation device, and I don't really use all the "power" stuff, so maybe it's just me...

^^ I don't understand all the hate though.

Yes, they made bad phones. They paid the price for it. Why is everyone cheering their death? RIM has 10K+ employees. Any "death" would cause those people to be out of work (Canada worst affected) which is horrible in a recovering economy.

OK, so what does BB10 have that Apple and Android don't that is going to make people go back to a platform they dismissed years ago?
