I just bought the Ridata 100-pack dvd+r's from newegg and was wondering whether this media was any good or complete junk as I have been reading. Would I be better off cancelling my order and getting Taiyo Yudens? Please give advice quickly so I can cancel my order before they ship it if necessary.

Honestly, I think the 03's are good media. I have an NEC 3500 and I believe I have burned nearly 200 of them without problems. That isn't to say I haven't had a single coaster, but I can't recall having one where it wasn't merely the fault of Nero freezing up and refusing to respond. I imagine there are some hardcore folk out there that swear by TY and would not do without, and for good reason as they are certainly top notch. However, my 03's are read by my DVD player, my computer (obviously) and my xbox without hitch, so they are perfect for me. As a plus, when I am burning data or archiving recorded TV, a firmware hack for the 3500 also allows me to burn them at 8x successfully.

The problem with Ritek media is that it is graded. My assumtion (and it's a big assumption) is that it is:

A-grade = the Ritek plastic spindles with a label
B-grade = the red shrink-wrapped stacks that say "RiData"
C-grade = the unmarked shrink-wrapped stacks

Anyway, I know they're graded. The A-grade is good. The B-grade seems to often have a lot of bubbles in the hub. The C-grade often has visible strangeness in the dye towards the outside and generally looks bad.

I once got a stack of G03s (DVD-R) that were almost all unreadable beyond the first 3,500,000,000 bytes.

I don't think NewEgg sells any of the C-grade media. That territory is reserved for shady vendors like Meritline and SuperMediaStore.

Regardless, I will never get Ritek again. There's no reason to get anything but the best media when you can get a 50-pack of Taiyo Yuden 8X for $26 at Rima. Newegg has it, but Rima is much cheaper.

I really cant tell the difference between media, so I say just use what you are getting.

Well this is my first experience with dvd media so I just want to make sure I don't experience any of the horror stories I've been hearing.

Well if it works, it's good enough for me. I'll probably just be using them mostly to back up data so I wouldn't need to worry about picky readers.

The picture on newegg looks like the a-grade you described, so hopefully they will turn out ok. That's a hot deal on rima, I will be sure to check it out next time.

I have burned literally 1000 RO3's (from Newegg) and I have only seen 3 bad disks. On those 3 disks, if I examine the dye, there is what seems to be streaks in it, like someone smeared it out. It's really wierd looking. All 3 were the last (or near the last?) disks on a 100pcs spindle.

I would not hesitate to buy Ritek R03's. They are half the cost pf TY and have played in every stand-alone DVD player I've tried.
