Hmm...I don't see this as road rage, probably because trying to hit the mustang like that could have killed them both. KTLA probably would have said it was road rage if it was.

My theory:

Mustang was probably coming up on the first car, passed on the left, but the truck was already speeding in the second lane. He gave the mustang the horn. The mustang tried to be reasonable and move over, even signaled, but the truck probably tried to pass the mustang on the right just before the mustang, which made the truck jerk left, and because of the cam car, the third lane was occupied, he had to jerk right which resulted in the over correction.

What I don't get is why the truck just didn't go in the fast lane. It appears no one was there, and the rest of traffic was slow enough that he could have went from slow lane to fast and back easily. Maybe he was trying to take the upcoming exit, which is why he tried to pass the on the right. Really though, just slow down. Big trucks roll too much to be ducking in and out of traffic like that.

The truck in question is never in the second lane in the videos, except briefly during the lane change attempt, and later while spinning.

The truck is an F-150 in the far right lane.

The Mustang honked at the F-150 driver for almost hitting him. The F-150 driver changed lanes into the Mustang because he did not want to slow down for the car way in front that was merging slowly from an on-ramp. F-150 driver did not look before changing lanes.

At some point a little later, the F-150 attempts an angry pass of the Mustang, and fails miserably, but karma prevails.

Is there another video or report of the incident, or is this your theory?

The idiot is driving a 4 door F-150 in the right lane.

It's what I see in the videos. There are two points where there is a lane to the F-150's right. An exit ramp and an on-ramp.

When do you see the F-150 in the second through lane? Which video and what time stamp?

When the F-150 attempts to collide with the Mustang, the lane to the F-150's right is the merge lane of an on-ramp. The F-150 doesn't want to slow down for the car merging in front of him, so he changes lanes without looking, and almost hits the Mustang.

Early in the video from the Mustang, there is an exit ramp on the far right for a brief period.

They are all passing under a bridge, which has a exit before it and an on-ramp after it.

In all the videos I've seen, there are always 4 lanes. The cam car is in the 3rd lane, and moves into the carpool lane to avoid the mustang at the end. But even at that point there are still 4 lanes. In the first lane there is a car thats slow with its left blinker on, so it probably just merged into the first lane. I think the mustang went into the second to pass it, as thats when we first see the mustang. It doesn't really make sense for the truck to be in the first lane unless he was a total ahole, as the cam car is traveling at 75mph. So it would make sense that the truck was in the second traveling like 90mph.

I also think the truck was the one that honked, as you hear it and don't see either car. I don't think I've ever seen someone honk at someone behind them on the freeway. The honker always honks at someone thats in front of them. I doubt the truck was ever in front of the mustang.

Consider the personality type that buys a truck for anything other than work and it's no surprise why truck drivers are dicks. I have yet to meet a single person who daily drives a truck who wasn't obviously deeply insecure inside.

Even less surprising is how you almost never see an old lifted truck, even though people have been lifting their trucks since the dawn of time. Hint: once they're lifted, they don't stay shiny-side-up long enough to get old.

Never come to Texas then...

Ugh, so many trucks/SUVs...sometimes I'm the only car in a sea of SUV/Trucks.

Prius and Lexus hybrid drivers should be number one and two.

I drive a truck everyday. I'm probably the most boring driver on the road. Always go speed limit and never over. I do that mostly for MPG.

Mustang looked to be in the right to me. The truck tried to creep into the lane and was startled by the Mustang. I'm not sure what happens after that. Witnesses say he tried to speed by but I can't tell anything from the video. Truck driver was a complete idiot though.

I'll go up to 6 mph over the speed limit, always with traffic. I have no qualms accelerating fast, especially when merging onto the turnpike/toll road. I hate it when I'm holding up people behind me and I have 380 hp available in the tundra, might as well use it for a quick burst to get up to speed. After that, I set the cruise and get out of the way for the most part.

It sounds like you have not seen the video from the Mustang at all.

Can pretty much tell when seeing one that some douchebaggery is about to take place.

I have not! I went back to the page and found it. Interesting that there are two cam videos of the same incident. That actually kinda makes it funny with that specific song playing, and it even stops perfectly in sync as he comes to a full stop.

Can anyone make out what the mustang driver said to the truck? The timing of it almost makes me think that was what set off the truck.

If you watch the Mustang video, I can see how it could be an honest mistake that the F150 didn't see him right away when taking into consideration the timing of each car trying to go into the same lane.

However, the Mustang was roughly 1/2 to 3/4 it's way into the lane before the F150 started to merge, so Mustang had right of way.

I've made similar mistakes to the F150 in the past, but minus all the over-reaction and butt hurt, therefore I never wrecked my vehicle.

F150 obviously at fault for raging quitting off the highway, but I also think the driver of the mustang is an idiot. Passing on the right is as bad as left lane cruising. Left lane looked completely open. If he was getting over to exit he still should have gave the truck a minute to feel it out and see what he was doing.

I think most people given that same situation wouldn't have just pulled on through between the truck and the car he was following, your average driver would see the danger and have a little more caution about the situation.

The Mustang was getting over in order to exit, I believe, not to pass on the right.

But he was passing, between two cars, one that he already should have seen was driving aggressively. Just like you speed up to match the left lane, he should have slowed down to match the further right lanes instead of trying to overtake on the right before he exited.

I get that, heck my roommate has a truck (non-work related) and one of the nicest people I know. But the amount of needless angry or tailgating truck drivers out there beats just about every other car stereotype.

Yeah it covers a wide range. Does not need to be brand specific.

Anyone in a large pickup be it Toyota, Dodge, Chevy, Ford, or even Cadillac or Lincoln, has a tendency towards douche-baggery.
The only exception would be Nissan Titans. In my town they seldom drive like murderous madmen.

The car in front of the Mustang hits the brakes as the Mustang is coming up behind him.

The Mustang probably wants to exit, so it makes sense to go to the right at that point, rather than go left around the slowing car, and then have to get back right again.

I think the Mustang passes the slowing car because of the near collision. The Mustang is just accelerating away from the idiot in the F-150.
