Still going through tons of info, but allow me to say HELL YES to this:

Musicians with their own MIDI-enabled drum kits and keyboard controllers can even buy an add-on adapter to allow them to work with the game, which will be sold separately for $39.99.

The joystiq preview today got me super excited.

And love the individual cymbals.. finally. I never liked the cymbal add-ons because it didn't matter which was which as long as you hit the right color.

Yes, the charted cymbals are a very nice feature. Even better, it turns out that most already-released DLC already has the cymbal charting info in it, even though it hasn't been used until now - so when you get RB3 your DLC will magically have cymbal charts. Unfortunately the same is not true for keyboards and harmonies (and pro mode on other instruments), but that was expected.

really a non-issue IMO.
on my roland, i'll tell friends who are casual players to feel free to hit whatever they want as long as the color matches.
if you're a real drummer, you'll know whether the yellow is a tom or the hi-hat,
the green is the crash or the floor tom, etc.

It's my hope that they may update some DLC and old songs to include pro mode data *crosses fingers*

I'm super excited at the idea of pro mode, but at the same time I'm not excited at all about the track list thus far. If there's no songs I enjoy available for pro mode then there's no point in buying the game or new controllers.

I disagree - I've never even bothered to buy any cymbals because they weren't charted or scored in any way - it seemed like just a gimmick. The whole point is I'm NOT a real drummer, but I'm happy to learn more if it's part of the game mechanic. Now with charted/scored cymbals, I will probably pick up the new pro set when they are available.

I'm planning to completely rewrite the OP based on all this new info, but haven't had a chance yet. In the meantime, here are a couple of videos showcasing pro mode. The first actually shows guitar gameplay in pro mode, though I have no idea how to interpret that track, obviously I'll be learning the game all over again, but that's OK because I will be learning how to play guitar at the same time.

Note - for some reason I can't get the Gamespot video to work right in browser, I had to download it.
EDIT: Found the problem, I had to disable Adblock Plus on the Gamespot page for the vid to work right.

Harmonix E3 2010 Booth Walkthrough

I haven't had a chance to watch this myself yet (have to run to a bus), but hopefully there is some good Rock Band 3 footage. There may also be some portion devoted to Dance Central, their newly-announced Kinect dance game.

EDIT: That was far less informative than I was hoping, it's not really worth the time.

Didn't show much of anything unfortunately. Just a quick run through of E3 stage setup. Cameraman seemed much more interested in the guy's face than the instruments which was annoying, so didn't get to see much.

You're right, that was pretty useless. Hopefully some better stuff will show up today.

That guitar looks like it will make slides impossible.

I'm not sure which guitar you are referring to? I can understand if you are talking about the Mustang, but the Squier should be able to do whatever a real guitar can do, since it is one.

There are 2 guitars for pro mode, one is a full Squier Strat electric with real strings that you really play. The other one (which I assume you're referring to) uses string like buttons on each fret. I assume the button one is the Mad Catz version for pro mode? Either way, the full Squier will be available but I can't tell if it's a special guitar or just a guitar plugged into a special adapter. If I could use my own guitars I'd cream myself.

There are 2 pro guitars. The Mustang has no strings on the fretboard; it has a ton of buttons with short strings in the strumming area. The Squier is a real, full-blown Fender Squier 6-string guitar with technology added to detect finger positioning and interface with the console.

Unfortunately you cannot use your own guitars because the RB3 version of the Fender Squier has special tech in the neck so it can detect finger positioning. You can, however, plug the RB3 Squier into an amp and play it standalone since it is a real guitar.

Hmmm... hope it works well. I'm starting to have my doubts though.

If you can use a real guitar, then that makes this a must buy. How much is this going to run you at retail? $350?

The game itself is the usual $60 (or $130 for the keyboard bundle). The Mustang is $150. The pricing for the Squier hasn't been released yet, but since it is a real guitar with additional controller tech thrown in, it is expected to be pretty expensive. I would not be surprised by anything from $300-$400, but that's pure speculation on my part. Of course you don't have to buy all this stuff at once, and the old Rock Band instruments will work fine outside of pro mode (and drums will even work there if you have cymbals).

The holidays will be expensive this year, but damn it will be awesome.

I'm pretty sure the awesome SF controllers saved them. Since they are better even than the HORI Real Arcade Pros.

Their Rock Band bass is really good too.

no. it is not. not at all.

and yes, i own one. rather, i own a paperweight because the strummer is garbage. the keys aren't any good either, for that matter.

every engineer ever to work for mad catz needs to harakiri themselves.

I doubt it's the engineers but the bean counters. Have you used any of their TE sticks?
