Rooted Nook to Cyanogenmod

Rooted my Nook HD+ to Cyanogen mode 10.2.1 stable today. First time I did a full root, I usually used a rooted stock image before, so it kept the nook version of the OS but allowed me to have additional functionality.

Not sure if I want to keep Cyanogenmod or go back. Its definitely a bit of a learning curve with Cyanogenmod and different.

I was pretty happy with the stock nook os, did what I wanted mostly. I couldn't get a few apps for it though, that was the biggest pain.

I had bad luck with CM on my Nook HD+. I guess there is some touch sensitivity issue that affects some users and I was one of them. Last I heard, the theory was some Nook HD+ tablets were using a different panel. But everything was fine with stock.

Currently running CM11 (2014-01-29 Nightly) and it's been rock-solid, in fact, the best experience I've had yet with the HD+ as KitKat in general feels smoother and more polished on it.

To the OP, I think if there's anything of a learning curve to using CM, it's worth it. At least you're learning Android as you'll find it on most other devices as well, rather than just learning some proprietary B&N way of doing things. If you eventually upgrade to another Android tablet, it'll be far more familiar to you.

Personally, I found B&N's proprietary software pretty sad. (Granted, it got much better after they allowed Play Store access. Before that, it was practically unusable for me.)

does seem like a lot more to CM, more control. Is there an easier way to organize your apps on the "desktop"? It's really awkward the way I am doing it now.

I bought an app on the nook store before I rooted my Nook to Cyanogenmod. I installed the Nook store for Android but it doesn't show my app there to redownload. Is there a way to do this? It was a paid app and I'd rather not buy the app again if I don't have to.

What launcher are you using?

I prefer Nova Launcher on my devices, including my HD+. (With all animations turned off or set to 'faster than light' settings it's the fastest and most no-nonsense launcher I've used.)

If I recall, CM installs Launcher3 or similar by default- if you haven't already I'd recommend trying Nova, or trying a bunch of different Launchers and seeing which you prefer.

In Nova, you have lots of control over the look/feel and you can organize apps in folders on the desktop, and keep your most-used in the multi-page dock.

This I don't know about- I never purchased anything on the lousy Nook app store. I don't know for sure, but I think they have their own license systems so apps you purchase there aren't transferable to the Play Store. As for it working on the Nook once in CM, I don't believe so. (The bookstore yes, the app store, probably not).

I found my Nook HD+ to be a bit laggy with CM 10.2. In general I'm not a big fan of stock Android - there is a lot of control, but it doesn't seem very polished. I went to CM before they had App store access, so I might even try going back to stock.

Just curious if you are still with 2014.01.29 or if you are using a newer rom. Looking to update from 10.1.3 - not certain which nightly to use yet for the first install - looks like some run better than others, doesn't appear that the newest rom is always the best choice - from what I'm seeing over at XDA forums.

Did you use the verygreen or succulent ROM?

I'm getting prepped to install CM on my S3, because the 4.3 upgrade has some annoying quirks (home button randomly popping the task manager, for example) and overall just seems laggy (not to mention the loads of verizon apps I don't want).

I know I need to update the recovery before I attempt the install. Where is that done? Can I create a recovery image on the SD card (have a 32-gig card)?

Have you checked xda for the Verizon S3?

If you have recovery installed already you should be able to flash an updated recovery over it.

If starting from stock, then you should be able to root and install recovery using a tool like Casual.
It's been a while since I had a verizon S3 so I'm not up on the latest. I'd recommend scour xda's forum under Verizon S3.

What amazon store stuff? I was able to run amazon app, kindle app, amazon music, and amazon app store. that was on a stock Nook HD+

Just download the apps from the Google Play Store.

I had been running CM 10.1 on my Nook HD+, but recently went back to stock (am thinking of selling it). After playing around it with a couple of days (readings, some tv watching) I have to say the latest stock OS, with access to the play store, is more than enough. CM does tend to lag (even if you run off the emmc) and stock+play store really does everything you need on a tablet like the HD+ (i.e. leverage that beautiful screen, it really is a great screen for reading, am going to miss it).
