I have a galaxy note 2, and I love it. But there are some things I would love to be able to change, and I want to try rooting.

My questions are

1) is there a way to root the phone using OSX. I only have a Mac.

2) does the Spen still work after rooting? I have heard conflicting reports, but I know nothing.

Thanks

If you are simply rooting, then the S-Pen will work since you'll be running the stock ROM. If you want to try other ROMs and maintain S-Pen functionality, stick to TouchWiz based ROMs. Last I checked, AOSP ROMs, such as Cyanogen and Paranoid Android, don't have any S-Pen functionality built in.

Keep in mind, rooting doesn't automatically mean running a custom ROM. So if all you want to do is root your stock phone, then of course, all the function you're used to (S-Pen and everything else) still works just as it did, you can just debloat and customize as you want.

And yes, you can root using OSX- I rooted my Note 2 using OSX.

I recommend Adam Outler's CASUAL method... BUUUUT....(super important) don't try ANY rooting or ROM method that's not specifically for your carrier version of the Note 2, definitely if you have Verizon.

So before you do anything, go to xda-developers and look up your EXACT Note 2 by carrier and then read through the development threads on the latest/best way to root it based on the firmware version you're currently running. Don't mess with some older or other-carrier specific method or you may brick your phone if you aren't careful.

Thank you. I am mainly looking to get rid of some bloatware and do a few customizations. I will hopefully get this done this week. Unless my wife goes into labour.

Thanks

Rooting will not affect s-pen functionality. Rooting just gives you low level permission/access to the operating system.
Installing a custom rom(only doable if rooted & running a custom recovery) could limit s-pen functions related to Touchwiz- hover, hold to screenshot, s-note, preview. As long as you stay with Touchwiz based, there is loss of functions.

I found this page here

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348

but it says its for the verizon version of the phone, but I cannot find a download that is built for anything other than Verizon. Does this work for all galaxy note 2's, or just the verizon one? I am feeling more like a noob than ever before just now.

I'm just a bit confused, as it seems to be the only CASUAL download i can find.

I also found this http://goo.im/devs/AdamOutler/VZWGalaxyNote2

but those all seem to relate to Verizon.

just for info, I'm running the international LTE version N7105

again, i appreciate the help

No problem. The toolkits make it very easy to root. Just follow the onscreen instructions.

There are pre-rooted Tar files available - but you would lose everything.

Dead simple though - Open ODIN, choose the Tar file under PDA, flash, reboot. (Low level overview)

Super simple - people do it this way as it doesn't show as "Modified" under the Status. Also Root is perm this way, so if you ever need to do a Factory reset, you won't lose root.

Just to clarify, These Tar files are Complete stock images of everything with Root injected into them.

I'm a Rom junkie and own a Note II. If you want a Stock experience, use the toolkit to flash a custom recovery and Flash CleanRom 5.0. It is the smoothest TW rom available on the Note 2 - Stock feels smooth, but wait till you try CleanRom. (Or Android Revolution HD)

IF you want to go a step further, Add Perseus or Neak Kernels.

I'm running my Note II on stock voltage at 1800 MHz (Stock is 1600) and GPU at 733 MHz (533 stock) and experiene no difference in battery life, but improvements in benchmarks.

i brought it to work to root as i got sick of trying to make this work on a Mac, all rooted successfully, might try a stock ROM, havent yet decided, but i have removed some bloat from Samsung, I hate most of the S apps, and i have installed soft keys and got google now to work with a long press of the home button instead of S-voice, so i'm pretty happy so far.

thanks for all the help.

Since you are presumably on an international base, I might suggest trying MeanBean ICE if you are looking into custom touchwiz based ROMs. I have tried quite a few, and I always come back to MeanBean (the US based version of the same ROM). It keeps the stock feel but enhances the experience quite a bit (better battery, a few nice tweaks).
