Rosetta Stone Users

I was at a friends house and they had some CD's they were going to throw away. And I found a Rosseta stone Learn Japanese's CD ch I and II I ask can I have he is like sure b.c they were going to throw it away. Now All I got was the discs he said it came whit papers and stuff Which he did not know were they were. So I Install the program and then I am trying to learn. And its telling me one word things like car and planes...ect. then it goes t sentences in the same section. And I know only 2 words out of 5 in that sentence at most like if it says "the boy is under the table. I only get Boy the rest I don't know. IS there some paper that spouse to explain me the other words?? What do I do.

Basically any one whit a Rosseta stone on 1.01 during the guided exercisers is it only 1 word items or whats happening to me is happening to you.

^^ I read it about 5 times I get it. Do you even got Rosseta stone CD's if you don't then thats why you don't get it.

Translation:
thescreensavers got a copy of Rosetta Stone Learn Japanese cds. These cds are supposed to teach him Japanese. Originally there was some documentation with the cds, that thescreensavers believes may have more information that would be useful. Right now he can only understand a small part of the lessons because the lessons are more advanced than a beginner would expect. Hopefully there is more training material on the documentation that originally came with the cds.

If there was documentation that you are missing maybe its on their website. I don't know much about the software but I thought it was "self contained" on the CD and had no external lesson documentation. Are you sure its lesson I and II that you have?

Ah I was correct. Its ALL self contained there is no documentation for the lessons. From their site on Japanese:

Rosetta Stone is self-contained and intuitive to use. There are no complicated lists to memorize or handbooks to read.

i THINK this is the point of rosetta-stone..i just started the spanish one two days ago.

The point is to "learn" like you do in real life....by seeing and "learning" what words are supposed to be with the help of the pics.

In real life language learning works the same.

You are NOT focusing on "XXX means YYY" but instead getting the grasp of the language from the conversation by listening and the pics.

Correct me if i am wrong.

simple example:

I now know what "carro verde" is or what "veijo" means or "queso" or "avioneta" etc..etc.....and noone ever TOLD me the english equivalent.
So...i learned..neverthless.

I've used Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish and French without much difficulty. It's pretty straightforward actually... it tries to get you to associate the sound/picture/letters together at the same time and keep doing it over and over until it becomes second nature. No es dificil. Ce n'est pas difficile.

I bought the Spanish one because I found it for what I thought was a great price. I am really unimpressed, especially considering the retail for the lesson 1&2 is like 300 bucks. The "we show you 4 pics, and you use memory to learn" I guess it works, but the problem is, it doesn't teach me, or make me able to understand sentence structer. Which is fine if I ever see a small boy standing under a airplane wing. But I fail to see how their teaching methods are any better, easier? probably, but it's lacking the basics. I've only used the disc's for about 30 minutes so far, so maybe I need to give it more time. But it seems like a pretty expensive different langauge match game. Would also be nice if it included some English explanations of what the hell's going on. If this was 99 bucks I might suggest it to people, but for 300 it seems like a total rip off *shrug*

That's true. If you really want to get into the actual mechanics of sentence structure involving conjugations, etc., you'll need to get a textbook to fill in the gaps. Rosetta stone will mainly help your pronounciation and listening ability.

When you stop a person on the street and ask for directions, you normally don't wait a moment to construct your question. Instead of going "let's see, I need a subject.. verb... possibly an object.." etc, you simply ask and the proper sentence structure naturally follows. Studying sentence structure and grammar is something you usually learn at school.
From what I understand, it seems Rosetta Stone software tries to teach the intuitive learning part, leaving you to pick up the structured schooling at a much later date in much the same way toddlers learn to speak before stepping foot in school.

That's my theory.
