Stupid question:

I have 3 computers, one cable modem line, and a linksys router. The computers have never been networked. Can i use my router to share the internet connection, without using a hub?

Most broadband routers come with a built-in switch. A switch is, in essence, a very high-performance hub. If you buy a broadband router (IE, Linksys, SMC, D-Link, etc.) just get one with enough ports for all your computers. Most start with a 4-port switch which should do fine for your needs.

yep. set the router up for DHCP and same with the computers and hooke all the computers using the network interfaces and standard console cables (patch, straight, though what ever you want to call them)

your setup will be like this

cable modem-->router (pluged into the uplink or wan port on the router, setup for DHCP)-->comp 1 to port 1 on the router (setup for DHCP)
-->comp 2 to port 2 on the router (setup for DHCP)
-->comp 3 to port 3 on the router (setup for DHCP)
this setup assumes that the router has a built in switch (more than one port)
