http://www.techspot.com/news/59074-amd-unveils-major-gpu-driver-update-catalyst-omega.html

Looks like techspot might have jumped the gun. Other websites have no news yet on AMD Catalyst Omega drivers. AMD's website still does not show the Omega drivers. should reflect within the next 24 hrs.

fwiw this is a major driver update with better performance plus new features like VSR (AMD's equivalent of Nvidia DSR), 1080p detail enhancement, Freesync support, Tress FX Hair 3.0, OpenCL 2.0, Mantle game capture, streaming and fps measurement through the Gaming Evolved client. AMD has introduced new video features such as Fluid Motion and Contour Removal. AMD has fixed a lot of bugs too.

They did, and having said that, you need to indicate as much in your thread title if it is not an official announcement from the company.

Now all they need is to bring back the old ATI Temporal AA (NV's MFAA) from the dead and that's a complete package.

The Detail Enhancement sounds interesting, wish they discussed it more.

Too bad VSR is only supported by the 290 series for now.

290 series and 285. basically hawaii and tonga which were the last two GPUs to launch from AMD.

SSAA is really only useful on top GPUs due to the grunt required. We've seen with NV's DSR, its pointless to have it on lower Keplers where it becomes a slideshow.

Likewise, 7950 is not going to be pushing much even in World of Tanks or WoW at 4K.

Glad to see AMD focusing on improving its drivers, with both new features and performance. Unfortunately the average gamer will keep repeating the same mantra that AMD's drivers are miles behind NV despite not using AMD cards in 4-5 years+.

On VSR, it's odd that 285 supports it but not 7970/280X. Sounds like AMD just doesn't have the resources at this time to target older architectures. At least they are laying the foundation for future GCN x.y series. The video enhancement features are interesting. Since a lot of people watch YouTube and stream online, a benefit here to increase sharpness and lower artifacts is much welcome. Hope this gets tested as it seems like the most ground-breaking feature for the mainstream if it works as advertised.

Does SSAA work on games that use post filtering effects? For instance in Skyrim I am using an ENB and it crashes if MSAA or FXAA are applied and states the ENB is not compatible with either due to some of the post filtering.

Downsampling is very welcome.

Anyway, I reckon it'll come to the other gcn cards as well, nvidia's thing was maxwell only for a few weeks too, probably a reason for it.

Excellent, downsampling finally for both IHVs without tweaking. This is a massive step forward for AMD, especially the speed with which they responded to DSR. I'm seriously considering Fiji now where before I leaned towards Nvidia only. I hope they keep up the good work

AMD has announced a major overhaul of their Catalyst graphics card driver software today, adding new features, improving performance and fixing a large number of bugs. The 'special edition' driver, which is the result of months of work, is one of the biggest AMD has released.

The Catalyst Omega driver boasts some serious performance improvements in many hardware configurations due to a more efficient design. AMD states that you can expect up to 19% more performance than the previous driver (Catalyst 14.11.2) when running games on high-end graphics cards, and up to 29% more performance on APU-based systems.

In our own testing, performed by our resident hardware reviewer Steve, we noted significant gains on high-end GPUs in a number of titles including BioShock Infinite and Metro Redux. However in some games, even those in AMD's Gaming Evolved program, there was no performance improvement at all: Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider and Crysis 3 are regularly seen in our hardware benchmarks, and recorded the same performance as the previous driver.

Results may vary in different hardware configurations, but it's definitely worth installing Catalyst Omega for the major gains in some titles, even if performance hasn't improved across the board on powerful GPUs.

But the driver isn't just about performance: AMD has crammed in over 20 new features, many of which gamers will enjoy.

Virtual Super Resolution (VSR) allows gamers to super sample their games, rendering at up to 4K quality before being downscaled to a lower resolution monitor. This form of anti-aliasing is arguably the best, significantly reducing jagged edges while keeping the game sharp. It comes at a high performance cost, though, so it's best suited to older titles unless you have 4K-capable hardware.

This type of anti-aliasing isn't new though: Nvidia implemented a version of it, which they named Dynamic Super Resolution, in their 344.11 driver for the GTX 980 and GTX 970 back in September. It's also been available in some games for years, although this driver-based implementation allows you to super sample any game in your library.

Aside from VSR, AMD has also improved frame pacing on both Dual Graphics and CrossFire systems, reducing stuttering and frame time variances.

As for video features, AMD has implemented several new ones into Catalyst Omega. Fluid Motion improves interpolation during video playback to remove judder, especially while panning, although for movie playback this isn't always a desired effect. However you might want to switch on Contour Removal, which does a great job of removing compression artifacts without reducing detail.

There's also 1080p Detail Enhancement, which improves the sharpness and detail of lower resolution content when played on a higher resolution display. A similar feature is available for those with 4K displays, which upscales lower resolution content while improving detail and reducing motion blur.

Catalyst Omega also introduces support for a number of new pieces of hardware, including FreeSync monitors, the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, and 5K displays like the Dell UP2715k through two DisplayPort 1.2 outputs. For those Eyefinity fans out there, Catalyst Omega now supports 24 monitor arrays on systems with four GPUs.

But it doesn't end there. AMD also focused on improving the driver experience by fixing a massive amount of bugs, including the top ten most reported problems such as errors during the install process, game and system crashes and black screens, and even pesky HDMI audio issues.

Catalyst Omega also brings support for TressFX Hair 3.0, OpenCL 2.0 and Mantle game capture, streaming and FPS measurement through the Gaming Evolved client.

To download the Catalyst Omega drivers (which we highly recommend you do), head over to AMD's driver website or our driver download section where they should be available shortly.

I thought driver forced super sampling was already a thing. What does VSR do that the previous way of super sampling didn't? Otherwise, since the latest game I bought was Dragon Age Inquisition, I hope that sees some performance improvements (and that the Mantle renderer actually works in full screen).

Compatibility! There are some titles that are not compatible with traditional or conventional AA methods.

Nice to see this from AMD and working hard on software and features.

Isnt Omega the name of 3rd party/hacked ATI/AMD drivers in the past? if so strange name choice....

Thanks for that since it went down.

To me that is a great sign that the reporting has actually bore fruit.
I don't know if I care about the VSR since I've heard that the NV equivalent isn't good. The crossfire and performance enhancements are nice bonuses.

I wonder if BF4 is more stable, or if it's simply the game which is buggy.

DSR
Shadowplay
etc.

Nvidia does have a more complete package currently but looks like AMD is aggressively trying to catch up. Performance wise, we can see it with Kepler how AMD essentially surpassed it and is now the better card to own.

ShadowPlay is nice but AMD has a solution with Gaming Evolved, it has more overhead that ShadowPlay because it does not have the on chip solution. However if you want the best results when recording you cannot use Shadowplay, so while it is nice for streaming or for you to record fun moments it doesn't work as a professional solution (some mild artifacting issues.) I cannot speak as to the Gaming Evolved solution as I have not used.

DSR just got a response from AMD as well.

With Mantle, FreeSync, Gaming Evolved, and their increased work with vendors I think AMD has pretty much caught up.

I've to agree,I also have no problems using AMD drivers as an Nvidia user as well in my other systems, too much FUD about AMD in general IMHO.

I'll try these out soon as they become available.
